Soccer: Brazil beats U.S. 2-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Brazil, appearing to
play at half speed for much of the game, completely
outplayed the United States and beat the Americans
2-0 Sunday in the opener of the U.S. Cup 93
tournament. >, J
Careca scored after just 41/2 minutes and the
Brazilians then seemed content to go up and down
the field at a scrimmage-like pace. Luiz Carlos Winck
finally got a second goal with three minutes left.
Brazil, 4-0 against the United States, outshot the
Americans 12-4, including 9-1 in the first half. The
best U.S. chances were by Roy Wegerle 10 minutes
into the second half and by Ernie Stewart with seven
minutes to go.

Bruguera wins French Open
PARIS (AP) — After five sets and four hours of
jaseli
jrueling baseline tennis, Sergi Bruguera succeeded
Junday in doing what no one has been able to do in
three years — beat Jim Courier at the French Open.
Playing in his first Grand Slam final, the 22-year-
old Spaniard prevailed 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to halt
Courier's French Open winning streak at 20 matches
and thwart his bid to join Bjorn Borg as the only man
to win three straight titles.
Bruguera, the first Spaniard to win the
championship since Andres Gimeno in ITT
collapsed onto his back on the red clay after Courier
hit a stretch backhand volley into the net on the
second match point.

the action of the Citizen Cup,
slipped down to the first row
and approached the court, stab
bing Seles in the back with a
nine-inch, curved, serrated bon
ing knife, narrowly missing one
of her lungs. When asked later
why he did this, his explanation
was simply that the thought of
Seles as the number one player
was disturbing and he believed
Graf should be number one.
Strangely enough, the WTA
had originally said that Seles' ab
sence would not affect her rank
ing and they of course wished
her a speedy recovery. Sadly, no
one knows when the hard-
willed, grunting 19-year-old will
return to the sport which she has
dominated the last two years.
Seles had been playing power
ful tennis over the last year and a
half, but was recently bedridden
for over two months, making her
return to tennis at the site of the
incident, the Citizen Cup. Unfor
tunately', her injury came at the
absolute worst time, just two
weeks prior to the French Open,
a title she had claimed three con
secutive years in a row. She now
is recovering and hoping to re
turn to action in time for Wim
bledon.
As for the assailant, he got ex
actly what he wanted. Graf will
return atop the charts and he will
joyously watch her regain that
position from a German prison
cell.
I agree that most things in life
aren't fair, but Seles had no con
trol over the incident and should
not be ranked lower for being
stabbed. She had earned and suc
cessfully held that position for
quite some time. One incident.
forcing her out and requiring
time for recuperation, should not
allow for the Graf fan to get what
he wanted.
This situation has implications
far beyond the tennis realm
What about other sports and oth
er athletes at their number one
spots respectively? NBA benches
are dangerously close to the
crowd, so too are dugouts in Ma
jor League Baseball. What is to
prevent crazed fans from say in
juring Michael Jordan during a
time out or attacking Jose Canseco
while in the on-deck circle?
Security concerns aside, the
point is, Seles' ranking should
not have been affected by this
event.
The man who harmed her,
nearly killing her, got exactly
what he wanted. It is a travesty
to see the wrongdoer get what he
wanted and the victim lose
everything she had.
