Sports Briefs Texas advances from Region II AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas Longhorns showed Monday why they've been to the College World Series more times than anyone else. Down by one run entering their last at-bat, the Longhorns scored twice then sent ace Brooks Kieschnick to the mound to save the 3-2 victory over Southern California for a record 24th berth to the national cham pionship. USC's misery began with one out in the ninth when Trojans starter Tony Nieto (8-5) hit Jerry Taylor with a pitch. Jeff Conway, pinch-hitting for Joel Williamson, followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Tim Harkrider followed with a single to put runners at first and third. After a flyout, Mark Prather singled to right field to drive in the winning run. Brooks Kieschnick, the NCAA Central II tournament Most Valuable Player, retired the Tro jans in order in the ninth for his third save. Chad Smith (8-2) was the winner, giving up no runs on no hits in 1 2-3 innings. Fifth-ranked Texas (50-14) won all four of its games at the regional. USC, second to the Longhorns with 17 CWS appear ances, finished its season 35-29. Jordan scores 54; Bulls tie series at 2 CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Bulls beat the New York Knicks for the second straight time, a 105-95 victory Monday in Chicago Stadium, a game in which Michael Jordan finished with 54 points. Jordan scored more than half his team's points, shooting 18 of 31 from the field. The Bulls did not secure Game 4 until Scottie Pippen con verted a 3-point play with 2:09 left and Jordan followed with an other basket with 1:36 remain ing. The Eastern Conference finals, tied 2-2, resume Wednesday night at New York's Madison Square Garden. It was the sixth time Jordan had scored 50 or more points in playoff games. He holds the all- time playoff high — 63 against the Boston Celtics in double overtime in 1986. The Knicks made a final bid with less than three minutes to play when they came within 94- 90 on a basket by Patrick Ewing and a free throw by Charles Oak ley. John Starks and Ewing each scored 24 points for New York. Horace Grant had 14 for Chicago and Pippen added 13. Jordan scored 17 points in the first period, 10 in the second, 18 in the third and 9 in the fourth. Starks' 3-pointer got the Knicks started to a 7-1 lead but the Bulls came back with an 10-4 run to tie it at 11. An 8-4 run with Jordan scoring six of the points put the Bulls on top 21-17. Starks tied it 21-21 but Grant broke the tie, and despite a pair of 3-pointers by Starks, the Bulls led 33-29 at the quarter. massage your the foot bed is Expect something new and delightfully different in Easy Spirit's new massage-action sandals. A&M's Jeff Granger was rocked for eight earned runs in five innings in the first game. Granger and three other pitchers surrendered 21 hits, including a SWC tournament record 8 dou bles to Texas - and a record three to UT slugger Brooks Kieschnick. A&M starter Kelly Wunsch and reliever Brian Parker issues 11 bases on ball - seven and four respectively, and hit five batters - four and one respectively. Texas' Kieschnick took excep tion to Wunsch plunking him, slung his bat and engaged in a shouting match with Wunsch which brought both dugouts onto the field and the coaches and um pires desperately trying to control the situation. "Every time we've played them. I've been thrown at at least once - a couple of them were at my head, a few of them were way inside." Kieschnick said. "Wun sch hadn't been too wild, he had been hitting spots pretty well, and then the first pitch is right at me. "I guess they finally got what they wanted, (and) I think it was pretty bush that they would eo out and have to do something like that if it was on purpose." "I don't think Kelly was mean ing to hit anybody, he hits a lot of people," Fedora said. "Brooks got to third and! asked him if he was all right, and he said 'Yeah, the only thing that made me mad , (Wunsch) was over there winking and smiling at me.'"
