clears a hurdle in a meet earlier this season,
rest of the Texas A&M track and field
contingent is preparing for the Southwest Conference
Championships in Austin next week.
Just as the semester is winding down
at Texas A&M, the hunt for postseason
victories in track and field is heating up.
Texas A&M track and field coach Ted
Nelson said that his team started off slug
gish, but has rebounded to become one of
the best teams he's ever seen.
Nelson was named Southwest Confer
ence Men's Coach of the Year in 1992 and
has spent 27 years of his coaching career
at A&M.
"Probably overall, it's the best team
we've ever had," Nelson said.
"A month and a half ago we weren't
doing very well," he said. "All of a sud
den, the people decided they wanted to
have a good track team, and that's what
they've been the last month and a half."
Nelson said heading into the confer
ence championships in Austin on May
19-21, his team looked good against the
rest of the competition, including the fa
vored University of Texas team - espe
cially after A&M beat them head-to-head
in a dual meet last weekend.
"Texas is at their home site and that
gives them a big advantage, but our
youngsters showed that we can compete
with them here on Saturday," Nelson
said.
"We beat them both on the men's and
women's side, out-gutting them in a lot
of races, and that's what a coach likes to
see.
"We not only were a better track team
than they were, we had a lot more heart
than they did."
