Police find lion in vacant house

DETROIT — For weeks, residents heard roaring
from the basement of a vacant house. Dogs, some
thought. Others knew differently.
A hungry young lion was found Monday night by
police officers called to investigate.
A staffer from a nearby wildlife shelter tranquil-
ized the 8-month-old, 150-pound lion and took the
malnourished animal to the shelter.
The male lion was expected to be placed in a zoo.
Residents told police they figured dogs had been
making the noise, but neighbor Billie Whetstone said
he had known the lion was there. He said it was
friendly.
Authorities were investigating whether the
home's previous tenants left the cat or whether it
showed up after the house was vacated.
