Airman Apprentice Terry M. Helvey, 21, of Westland, Mich., entered the plea at a pretrial hear ing for a Navy court-martial set to begin June 1. He was arrested after the body of 22-year-old Allen Schindler was found in a pool of blood in a public restroom in Sasebo, south ern Japan, last October. Schindler was so badly bat tered that his mother had to iden tify him by tattoos on his arm. Helvey and Schindler were shipmates on the amphibious as- sauit ship USS Belleau Wood, based in Sasebo. Sasebo is 30 miles north of the southwestern port of Nagasaki on the island of Kyushu. Helvey is charged with pre meditated murder, which carries a maximum penalty of death. But he pleaded guilty to com mitting murder with intent to in flict great bodily harm. That would make the killing un premeditated, and result in a maximum of life in prison and a dishonorable discharge. Travel THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES — The answer: A television game show accused by a former employee of some times rigging questions to favor women contestants. The question: What is "Jeop ardy!"? Harry Eisenberg, a former writer for the popular show, said in a new book that clues and top ics were altered at the last minute to be more "female-friendly," like replacing a category on weapons with one on clothes. The show's producers said "Jeopardy!" is fair and denied any wrongdoing. "We have an unaggressive fe male champion. Let's give her some easy stuff," producer George Vosburgh is quoted in the book as telling his staff before the taping of a June 20, 1989, show, Riddle said. One time, questions about bas ketball star Michael Jordan were replaced with questions about ballet dancer Mikhail Barysh nikov, Riddle said. Galapagos Islands Tours $1450 and up. In a press conference in early March, A&M football coach R.C. Slocum said he understood why it was easy for the situation to get out of control. "It is human nature to take ad vantage of the situation," he said. "They are sorry about the inci dent and the embarrassment it caused the school. "It is an incident they can learn from," he said. The Battalion contacted Wrotenbery, but he was unwill ing to discuss his letter or his fa ther-in-law's disassociation on record. Wrotenbery did say that he has contacted Texas A&M System Board of Regent Chairman Ross Margraves about "facts regarding the situation that would clear (Gilbert's) name." As of Friday, Margraves could not be reached for comment at his office, and his home phone num ber is unlisted. Texas A&M President William H. Mobley would not comment on record about the fairness of penalizing Gilbert, though he claims he knew nothing about the payments to the athletes. Gilbert himself replied to this issue in a letter to the 12th Man Founda tion. He denied knowing about any rule, policy or procedure with re spect to the hiring of student ath letes that he has not followed. "I would have never thought it necessary to stand watch over Aggie student-athletes to make sure they did not take 'advantage of an employment situation of their own volition,"' Gilbert stat ed. "Had I been asked to monitor those activities above and beyond what I would have done for my ordinary employees, I would have done so." Mobley said the student-ath letes are not escaping from the in cident as easily as it may seem. "The sanctions weren't light," he said. "Being an athlete and working all year to get to a bowl game, and then you can't play - it's a big sanction." Several athletes will get addi tional sanctions, and all players are to pay back the illegal pay ments. Gilbert said in his letter that he wishes to have his name cleared, if not by other people coming for ward, then by his actions. "I hope in the future that (Head Football Coach) R. C. Slocum and others will confirm that I have not and would not do anything to reflect negatively on A&M," he said. "I sincerely hope that my continued cooperation and devotion to A&M in taking the course that I have set for my self will bear witness to that fact." Nothing to do this summer?
