The Battalion Tuesday, April 27,195!
Whitley
Continued from Page 2
present bad news as well as good
news," he said.
Whitley said it is tough for The
Battalion staff to perform as real
journalists at times.
"Most journalists do not have
to worry about homework, an 8
a.m. history class, or 12-page
reports - all the stuff associated
with college," he said.
At times, it is difficult for staff
members to maintain a focused
effort because so many of them
are involved in other activities,
Whitley said.
"I think on the whole, we do a
good job considering we are
students trying to learn in a
laboratory, such as some students
take chemistry lab to understand
chemistry. Except ours is seen by
23,000 people everyday," he said.
The Battalion is also concerned
with getting a more diverse staff
because cultural awareness is
becoming more and more
important to the community,
Whitley said.
"Minority issues will not be
ignored," he said. "A diverse
staff is the key to getting diverse
issues in the (Battalion)."
Last fall. The Battalion was
criticized for racial insensitivity
after a cartoon was published
which depicted Rep. Ron Wilson
as a black dog. Wilson is black.
Whitley said The Battalion staff
is not racist in any way.
"We learned a lot from the Ron
Wilson incident, especially how to
take a closer look at things we put
into the paper, and what their
sensitivity factor will be," he said.
In response to accusations of
political bias, Whitley said The
Battalion offers a fair and
objective voice to students. The
editorial board is not biased
either, it has equal political
balance, he said.
"We have gotten complaints of
being a liberal rag and a
conservative propaganda, built;
maintain objectivity in our news
(reporting)," he said.
Whitley has been involve!
with newspaper writing sinceliis
sophomore year of high school,
He was a sports writer, spoils
editor, and editor in chief offe
high school newspaper.
"Once you get started, ills
hard to get out," he said.
Whitley has worked forllit
Battalion as assistant sports edito:
sports editor and a columnistf«
the opinion page.
He was appointed editorii
chief on April 6 by E. Dean Gag;
senior vice-president and provost
after being interviewed an!
nominated by the Studeii
Publications Board.
Loughman
Continued from Page 2
some people looked at it
(cartoon), but it was not racist," he
said.
Loughman said he hopes to
increase readership by
establishing a reader advisory
panel whose purpose will be to
provide feedback to him about the
newspaper. It will consist of
several student readers who meet
every two to three weeks with
suggestions and complaints for
The Battalion staff to consider.
Some readers charge that The
Battalion has political biases, but
this is not true, Loughman said.
The staff does not reveal opinions
in news stories, he said.
Some members of the Corps of
Cadets feel The Battalion attacks
the Corps with negative news
coverage. As a former Corps
member of the now disbanded
Company N-l, Loughman said
The Battalion does not attack the
Corps of Cadets.
Still, Loughman said he
understands the negative feelings
cadets have because he, too, was
critical of The Battalion as a cadet.
"The Corps has to understand
that it is a highly visible,
important organization on
campus and is seen more with or
without the paper," he said. "To
do our jobs as journalists, it is our
obligation to our readership and
to ourselves to find out what the
story is and cover it."
Although journalism was not
his original major at Texas A&M,
Loughman said he enjoji
working for The Battalion ami
studying in journalism. Helm
been a columnist, opinionpagt
editor and reporter for Tk
Battalion.
Loughman said he feels Ik
Battalion can be a good sourced
information for the students.
"We cover the campusin<
way no one else is capable." k
said. "We provide informatiomr
the latest things, such as the 151
hour bill to what there is todotr
the weekend."
Loughman was interviewei
and nominated for the position a
editor in chief by the Studeii!
Publications Board. Dr. E. Deal
Gage, senior vice-president an!
provost, then approved an!
appointed Loughman on Aprilf,
