Whitley to honor
Batt's 100th year
By SHELIA VELA
The Battalion
The Battalion will celebrate its
100th anniversary October 1,1993,
and the 1993 fall editor in chief's
primary goal will be to honor the
newspaper with a special edition
on that date.
"The 100th year anniversary is
a tremendous occasion because it
shows how long The Battalion has
served A&M," said Chris Whitley,
a junior journalism major from
Grand Prairie.
"It is an older tradition than
Bonfire and Reveille," he said.
"The Battalion has been an
integral part of this University
and its students, and will
continue to be important for the
next century."
Whitley said he plans to
improve The Battalion by
stressing more diversity in its
news coverage. Informing the
public of events affecting the
A&M community should be the
staff's constant goal.
"The mission of The Battalion
is to make sure daily knowledge
gets into the hands of the
students, as well as entertaining
them," he said.
Although he is optimistic
about the upcoming semester,
Whitley said The Battalion still
faces some problems. Negative
feelings from students, staff
members working double-duty as
reporter and student and
improving the coverage of
minority issues are all problems
to overcome, he said.
Some readers feel that The
Battalion's purpose is to attack the
University, but Whitley said this
perception is wrong.
"A lot of people do not
understand what we are obligated
to do, and that we are forced to
Loughman to raise
paper's credibility
By SHELIA VELA
The Battalion
The Battalion editor in chief
for the 1993 summer semester
said his main goal is to increase
the student newspaper's
credibility.
"We have credibility, buti
large portion of the student bodt
doesn't believe us," said jasor
Loughman, a senior journalism
major. "Professional, qualilv
journalism is not out of reach. Its
a matter of commitment and who
we hire."
Loughman said one challenge
The Battalion faces is thatils
entire staff consists of students
who are learning journalism
while practicing it at the samr
time.
"Nobody works here full-time
we are all part-timers whojugglt
with The Battalion, schoolan3
personal schedules," he said
"We are not yet professiom!
journalists. We are going to maki
mistakes, and all we can do it In
to control and limit them."
Loughman said The Battalior
has a great deal of freedom
compared to other newspapers
Nobody at the University excepl
the editor in chief has the powe
to control or censor the paper's
news or editorials.
Last fall. The Battalion rana
cartoon depicting Rep. Ron
Wilson as a black dog whidi
drew criticisms among readers
that the staff is racially
insensitive.
However, Loughman said, The
Battalion is not racist in its hiring
or content.
