Aggies share spirit with special olympians
By DARRIN HILL
The Battalion
Spirits were high this weekend as special athletes from around Texas
gathered to compete in the '93 Area 6 Special Olympics held this weekend at
A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.
Many Texas A&M students volunteered to act as 'buddies/ who
accompany one athlete throughout the games. They encouraged athletes and
yelled their support equally for winners and losers alike.
Contestants were awarded medals and ribbons from Texas A&M athletes
such as Aggie Basketball players Tony Barone Jr. and Lance Broderson, for
events such as walking, running, throwing softballs and shot puts.
Over 22,000 athletes participated in 16 different sports in statewide
competitions, while almost 600 local participants from surrounding counties
took part in the Bryan-College Station events.
Texas Special Olympics is a statewide, year-round sports training and
competition program for individuals with mental retardation ranging from ages
8 to 80 and is operated by various volunteers from around the state.
