Both Bush and his wife spoke
to classes in Rudder Tower in the
afternoon. Bush spoke to a class
on American Presidency and Bar
bara spoke to students in an edu
cation curriculum class.
Before attending Muster, Bush
attended a reception for student
leaders and other guests. Wiatt
said Bush told him after the last
reception that he was worn out
from the long day.
"He said he understood that
the lights are dimmed during
Muster, and he hoped he
wouldn't fall asleep," Wiatt said.
Wiatt said he was pleased with
how they day worked out.
"We are very grateful that
nothing happened," he said. "It
was just what we wanted - an un
eventful event."
Rally

though they may agitate people
verbally.
While the best advice is to stay
away from the rally, other av
enues for action do exist.
Carol Albrecht, a teaching as
sistant at the A&M Department of
Sociology, said students can be ac
tive against the Klan without di
rect confrontation. She recently
completed a comparative analysis
on the emergence and survival of
the Klan.
"The students should not sit
back and totally ignore it," said
Carol Albrecht, a teaching assis
tant at the A&M Department of
Sociology. "They (students)
should do something positive
somewhere else."
A&M students have responded
with Whoopstock, also known as
Unity Fest '93, which will be held
on the Polo Fields from noon to 5
p.m. The Diversity and Equality
Coalition (DEC) is planning a ral
ly on the front steps of the System
Administration Building at noon.
In news reports, the Klan had
said it is coming to College Station
on behalf of requests from Klan
members who are Texas A&M
students.
However, that may not be the
only reason they are coming to
town, Albrecht said.
"They want college students
desperately for leadership," she
said. "Second, they see students
being open to learning new
things. This may be a weakness if
you're not cautious of the things
you accept."
Albrecht suggested students do
research on the Klan because the
Klan presents propaganda at their
rallies.
"It is not good for people to be
ignorant of the Klan," she said.
"They (Klan) will use that igno
rance. Students should never take
what they say at face value."
Beddingfield said students
should also keep in mind that
physical damage can happen at
Klan rallies.
"The bigger the crowd, the
more chances there are of a prob
lem," he said. "The bystanders
are the ones who usually get hurt."
Albrecht said direct confronta
tions make the Klan more visible.
The Ku Klux Klan often relies
upon a weapon greater than phys
ical violence to spread its mes
sages of hate. That weapon is
publicity. Often it is unwittingly
supplied by those who go to their
rallies as anti-Klan protesters and
curiosity-seekers.
"The biggest danger is not the
violence, but giving them publici
ty," she said.

been holed up in their "Ranch
Apocalypse" compound for 51
days when the FBI moved in
Monday with tanks, ripping gap
ing holes in the walls of the build
ing and injecting tear gas in an at
tempt to force the cult out.
A quick-moving fire broke out,
engulfing the huge compound in
only minutes, Ricks said.
The FBI maintains that sect
members set the fire in a twisted
mass suicide. Those who escaped
the blaze say the fire started when
tanks coming through a wall burst
a propane tank and knocked over
a lantern.
Ricks said airplanes monitored
the situation.
"They had sightings of simul
taneous eruptions of fire from at
least five different locations. And
they believe it possibly could have
even been up to six different loca
tions that the fire started all at
once," he said.
FBI snipers also reported see
ing a follower kneel next to the
building with something cupped
in his hands, possibly a match.
Flames appeared there instantly.
