campaign throughout the month. It is encour
aging everyone to tie a plaid ribbon to their car
antenna or to wear a plaid ribbon on their
lapel to show their support for a violence-free
community.
"We went with the ribbon campaign to
spark people's curiosity and to get more peo
ple involved," McCune said. "We hope to
bring more people to the realization of rape,
either by volunteering (at the Crisis Center) or
by utilizing our services if it has happened to
therp/'
She said people need to remember that rape
is a violent crime, not a sexual crime.
The Crisis Center also is sponsoring a safety
awareness and self-defense class this Saturday.
The class will give participants information on
how to protect themselves at home, in the car
and on the street. Self-defense maneuvers will
be taught, and the prqs^nd cons of safety de
vices will be discussccj^i
By conducting these classes and programs,
the UPD and the Crisis Center are hoping to
bring attention to the problem of sexual as
sault and to stress prevention by education.
"By raising the public's awareness, we
might prevent some sexual assault from hap
pening," McCune said. "We teach awareness
to keep the opportunity (for rape) low."
A part of that education is the increasing
awareness of date or acquaintance rape.
"There are two basic types of sexual assault:
assault by a stranger and assault by an ac
quaintance," said Lt. Bert Kretzschmar, UPD
crime prevention specialist.
He said reports of date rape are increasing
even though many people continue to think of
sexual assault or rape as being perpetrated by
a stranger. More and more victims of date
rape are coming forward. "Third-fourths of
rapists are those you know," McCune said.
However, because of the stigma attached to
date rape, many victims do not report the
crime. r
A victim is often embarrassed. It's a real
typical issue, the self-blame and guilt," she
"In date rape, only one out of every 10 is ac
tually reported," Kretzschmar said. "They
will report a stranger rape first."
For the prevention of date rape, Kret
zschmar encourages females to be alert to sig
nals, especially with someone they don't
know, such as a blind date.
"If a female sees a situation arising, she
should aggressively sa^ 'no,'" he said. "Don't
diddle-daddle around."
McCune said a female should be wary if a
date becomes too possessive or drinks too
much.
Kretzschmar said in addition to being alert
and aware, a female must trust her instincts if
she feels that something is wrong. More often
than not, her instinct is correct. If it is, she
must try to get out of the situation as soon as
possible.
McCune said it also is important for the
older generation to learn and to know about
date rape.
"This will change the stereotype of the
rapist and the stereotype of the victim," she
said. "It will change attitudes."
To avoid sexual assault by a,stranger, Kret
zschmar encourages females to travel in
groups and remain alert to their surroundings.
He said several escort services are available on
campus so females do not have to walk alone
on the campus.
"Rapists are opportunists," McCune said.
"Women need to be reminded constantly of
the opportunities a rapist will take."
It also has been stressed for women to re
port any suspicious activity, even if it may
seem trivial.
"The police would much rather write a re
port on someone looking in the window than
to come to your house to do a rape report," she
said.
If a rape does occur, Kretzschmar encour
ages women to file a report. A victim can file a
report and not press charges. "We would like
to know if the guy is a problem," he said.
The Crisis Center also does not pressure a
victim into disclosing any information she
doesn't want to make known. Rather, they
work her through the recovery process.
"We are here for the survivor and her needs
at the time," McCune said.
Kretzschmar said counseling services also

team's chances, which out-hit the Corps 7-5.
"We left about 10 people on base, they hit
our fastball and we had a couple errors that
killed us," Moore said.
"They almost did what we did last year -
walked in the winning run," he said. "I
thought it was going to be deja vu the other
way."
Moore said he would like to see the game
extended into a double-header or into a two-
night series so all players would have enough
time on the field.
"You narrow it down from 50 guys that
come out to try-outs to about 18 guys, and af
ter that, the pitchers get to pitch one maybe
two innings because you have about four or
five pitchers," Moore said.
"1 guess you could cut it down but we had
so many good hitters that we couldn't cut it
that far to 10 or 11 guys," he said.
Moore said playing at Olsen Field was fun
and an incredible experience, and he said he
appreciated the opportunity to play there.
"I can't believe they let us play out here, it's
such a perfect field - I'd think that Leo (Go-
ertz, Olsen Field's groundskeeper) and all
them would think we would screw it up,"
Moore laughed.
