By JENNY MAGEE The Battalion "Benny &Joon" Starring Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson and Aidan Quinn Directed by Jeremiah Chechik Rated PG Starts Friday at Manor East III "Benny & Joon," a skillful com bination of all the subtle humor and secret pain associated with life, love and relationships, is un questionably one of the first must-see movies of this year. Benny (Aidan Quinn), the seri ous car mechanic, seems like he would have been more likely to share a gene pool with a math teacher than his carefree sister Joon. Joon (Mary Stuart Master- son) is an expressive painter, the master chef of a peanut butter and Captain Crunch milkshake, and a schizophrenic. The most entertaining and sometimes stressful part of Ben ny's life is curtailing all the cata strophes his sister's mental con dition gets her into. Benny is a devoted brother and wants to do everything possible to avoid putting Joon into the community home as her psychiatrist sug gests. Their lives take an interesting twist when Joon loses a poker game to one of Benny's work buddies, rendering her responsi ble for the mans very weird cousin, Sam. Sam (Johnny Depp) is the classic clown. With the big fat "WEIRD" that society has stamped on Sam's forehead, his skillful Charlie Chaplin imper sonations and innovative culi nary skills (like the ability to steam iron grilled cheese) make him the perfect soul-mate for Joon. "Benny & Joon" possesses every element that makes a movie memorable- humor, a touching story line and excellent character development. Masterson and Depp both give their characters such sincerity and depth that viewers feel com pelled to sympathize with them. However, if Sam and Joon were real people, no one would care about their problems. Because they are up on a movie screen, their mental inadequacies be come cute and sweet because they make a good story. This is not a movie about men tal illness; it's a movie about deal ing with life and relationships Yes, the characters are people with mental problems, but theii actions sometimes make a lol more sense than some of the ac tions of the sane world. "Benny & Joon" is a wonder fully odd film. In accordance with the message of disregard for social norms, it would be a nice touch if MGM would forego the typical movie sound track and other paraphernalia and releases "Benny & Joon" cookbook. Thai way if the beautiful story of "Ben ny & Joon" fails to touch a view er's heart, at least they've got ac cess to great recipes for steam- ironed grilled cheese and peanut butter and Captain Crunch milk shakes. Reveille Continued from Page 3 lection stations around campus and collected money for two weeks so she could earn the ti tle of general." Although now only members of E-2, called "Rebel-E," hold the mascot corporal position. Reveille once belonged to the band. E-2 took control of the Aggie mascot from the band af ter a severe storm one night in 1952. "The band kept her in a cage outside the dorms," said Argo. "One night some E-2 'Rebels' were walking by and took her into their dorm. They have had her since then." Though they have shared the same name, each Reveille has had her own history. "Reveille I wandered all over campus," said Lively. "She didn't have anyone specific to take care of her as she does today." The first Reveille was also in the movie "We've Never Been Licked," Lively said. In addition to biting Texas Christian Univer sity's football coach, Walter Roach, in 1957, Reveille II distinguished herself as the only mascot to have puppies, Lively said. ^ "She had 10 puppies in 1952, five males and five females," he said. "Sixty band members' parents wanted the puppies so they went to the first 10 names on the list." Reveille III was the first collie to wear the five diamonds that symbolize her rank of gen eral. The earlier mascots were not purebreds, Heath said. "She (Reveille III) had an overbite and couldn't drink from a bowl," Lively said. "So she would jump up and drink from water fountains." The fourth Reveille was the most lively of the mascots thus far. Heath said. "Reveille IV was the most acrobatic and en ergetic of the mascots," Heath said. "She used to perform at halftime of basketball games. She would catch frisbees and do flips." Reveille V, the current mascot, was nick named "Maybe" by her breeder when si made the first cut in the new mascot selectio: process, Scheumack said. Heath has used details such as these to him decide who Reveille's next caretaker wil be. "As it gets closer. I've had to spend moii time quizzing the candidates and getti know them in order to make an informed sion," he said. Past mascot corporals have learned a lol from the job. Junior Greg Riels, mascot corpo ral '91-'92, said, "It's like having a child for) year." Heath said, "As mascot corporal, I'vt learned even more respect for her and othei traditions on campus. Everywhere you you take into account that you're walking with a lady." Client Continued from Page 3 Ladies and gentlemen, you can unbuckle your seatbelts. The chase is on, but it's not high speed pursuit. Grisham hasn't given us the usual fast food mystery fare in "The Client." We're at the Olive Garden and we're going to enjoy our meal. Sure, Grisham over loads the story with familiar Mafia thugs and pompous attor neys but he offers pieces of reality in Dianne Sway, the overworked single mom, and Mark, whose blend of maturity and mischief is entertaining. Grisham's real victory is Reggie Love, the sort of character women in Hollywood have been begging for . . ja real one. Candice Bergen could play her if she shed the "Murphy Brown" stigma, but if they sell out and cast a woman under forty there'll be protests! Outrage! (And no Macaulay " Sulkin' " Culkin as Mark either.) Love is a lawyer for the nineties and hopefully a recurring charac ter in Grisham's upcoming novels; two in the next two years. For those of you who thought Grisham could only write roller coaster suspense, this is moreofa waterslide. It doesn't haveas many life-threatening twists and turns but it's still fast-paced and just as fun. Don't be surprisedil Grisham has an entire amusement park up his sleeve. This one-man mystery machine has proved once more that he's not running out of fuel anytime soon. • Can't tell Bach from Bartok? • Does it all sound the same to you?
