come what Buckley was last year.
I hope I can live up to the reputa
tion A&M linebackers have."
While at A&M, Buckley's main
responsibility was to rush the
passer, which was evidenced by
nis 29 career sacks. Solari will
play a more versatile role than
just applying pressure on the
quarterback.
Davie envisions Solari becom
ing a complete linebacker.
"We are going to ask Steve to
do more things like covering peo
ple out of the backfield because
that is the type of guy he is,"
Davie said. "He will do a lot of
drops.
,A He is a true linebacker type of
guy and what he does will de
pend on what side he plays on."
Due to Solari's multiple roles,
Davie said fans should not expect
Solari to put up big sack totals.
"A player like Steve, he can't
be judged on statistics," Davie
saia. "We will ask him to do a lot
of different things, not just rush
ing the passer. Because of that, he
>robably not post the num-
wui propaPiy not pc
bers like Marcus did.
"We basically turned Buckley
loose but with Steve he will have
several other things going on."
Solari said he looks forward to
the challenge of covering those
"scatbacks" coming out of the of
fensive backfield.
"Don't get me wrong, nothing
beats, or is like, rushing the quar
terback," he said. "But the things
that the coaches are looking at me
to do like covering running backs
will be an experience.
"It will not be easy chasing
someone faster, but good players
rise to the occasion and thrive on
it. I hope I can."
While preparing for his expand
ed part, Solari has kept a name
tucked in the corner or his mind.
The person who he hopes to emu
late has experienced success in the
NFL to the tune of two Super
Bowl rings by doing the things
Solari hopes to do next season.
"I want to be like Wilbur Mar
shall of the Washington Red
skins," Solari said. "He does a
great job of rushing when he has
to and covering a running back
when he is called upon to do that.
His drops and rushing ability are
excellent.
"To do that, I need to stay
healthy. No more injuries, be
cause they are nothing but frus
tration."

gracing Chickwood's face. It
was even a moral victory, at that.
Gene Hackman gave a virtu
oso performance that offered
sympathy for the devils in the
college basketball coaching
ranks, displaying some silver lin

No matter what should hap
pen in reality and no matter
what your tastes, in the movies
you'll get a perfect microcosm of
sports packed with humanity
and immediately evident deep
meanings - a slice of the athletic
drama with all the trimmings.
Shakespeare said all the
world's a stage, so why not settle
for the best actors for your sport
entertainment?
Of course, there are different
types of sports movies for all
moods.
There are the bright, pastoral
homages to the purity of sport
that are gracefully rendered in
movies such as "Hoosiers," "The
Natural," "Rocky," and "Field of
Dreams."
Of this group. I've got to go
with "Hoosiers" as tops, nipping
Sylvester Stallone's single solid
acting performance as an under
achieving, aging boxer presented
with an out-of-the-blue title shot
offered by the heavyweight
champion of the world.
There are the great, cynical
movies that take stabs and poke
their dry wit at sport and the
human animals that perform for
us. "Bull Durham,' "The Bad
News Bears," and "North Dallas
Forty" are plainly superior from
this collection.
"Bull Durham" is the best by
far - a story that hits right at the
heart of every true baseball play
er and fan. -And they've got a
sequel in the works that'll be
EVEN better!!
Yeahright. Give up while
you're ahead, Costner.
And then, like the voice from
the NFL films, there are the real
ly, really important sports
movies: The Dramas.
First the uplifting, sometimes
tinged with sadness, ones,
"Pride of the Yankees," "A
League of Their Own," "Brian's
Song," "Breaking Away" and
"Bang the Drum Slowly." Who
can say which of these are the
best? Well, I can, and I say it's
"Brian's Song," the greatest
made-for-television movie ever,
with James Caan and Billy Dee
Williams starring as racially-
challenged friends and Chicago
Bear football teammates in the
'60s.
But now - the dark and seamy
side of the athletic spirit: "Rag
ing Bull," "Eight Men Out," and
"The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh"
(ignore this last reference at all
costs - just seeing if you're
awake).
I give the nod to "Raging
Bull," which showcased DeNiro
in an oscar-winning role as fight
er Jake LaMotta — a tough, bru
tal performance. I'd recommend
catching the flick just to see
DeNiro work out and fight at a

to 212 as he portrays
aged LaMotta.
