Thom Bren- naman should be fired. Why should the entire broadcasting team of the Chicago Cubs get their walk ing papers? They cost Cubs' pitcher Jose Guzman a perfect game against the Atlanta Braves. Anybody involved with baseball knows that when a pitcher is throw ing a perfect game/no-hitter, you are not supposed to mention it be cause it wi h j inx the game. But somebody forgot to tell the stooges up in the WGN broadcast booth. It all started in the fourth inning, when it became apparent that Guz man was on the verge of doing something special. Up to that point he was perfect. Watching it at home, I knew something remarkable was in the making, but I did not dare men tion it. But Steve and Thom did. It was like they were addicted to the phrase "perfect game". "Guzman strikes out Pendleton, and he still has the perfect game." "Justice pops it up to shallow cen ter, and Guzman still has his perfect game." "The wind blowing in at five miles an hour, perfect weather for a perfect game." College Station product Tommy Pre ston. Preston has received most of the snaps in practice after Pullig went down with a strained medi al collateral ligament. Although the injury did not require surgery, it did knock Pullig out for the Spring, leaving Pre ston at the number one spot. "If we had to go into a game right now, obviously he'd be number one be cause Pullig is hurt," Toledo said. "Corey Pullig is our quar terback and Tommy is our backup right now. Everybody else is battling from there." Preston said Pullig was having an outstanding spring training as the Ag gies' quarterback until he went down, but Preston said his goal is to take Pul- lig's starting job. "If I don't tell myself that I'm press ing for the starting job. I'm going to get lackadaisical and stop doing the things I've been doing to get the number two spot," Preston said. "(Pullig) was doing pretty much everything he should be doing as start ing quarterback. "I don't know everything (yet) - if I did. I'd be starting quarterback." At A&M Consolidated, Preston made a name for himself as one of the top prep quarterback prospects in the state ^ after leading his team to the state finals .afeV!- Preston and the state semi-finals in his junior and senior years, respectively. However, after passing for 2,783 yards and 23 touchdowns, as well as garnering several post-season player of the year honors, Preston has been forced to bide his time learning the of fense at A&M. "I've been a lot more relaxed and comfortable with the offense (this year)," Preston said. "I would like to think that the spot's up in the air, and that's what I've got to think in order to keep competing for the starting job." As the number two quarterback, Pre ston said he has maintained this atti tude and worked harder and longer to prepare for the job and compete for the number one slot. Toledo said Preston has been im proving in his three years at A&M be low starting quarterbacks Bucky Richardson, Jeff Granger and Pullig. "Mentally he's understanding things better, and physically he's understand ing what fundamentals and techniques he needs to compete for the starting job," Toledo said. "When he was in high school, he ran out of the shotgun all the time, and he never had any drop-back fundamentals and keying defenses and that kind of thing." Toledo said Preston had a lot of po tential, and looked sharp enough to lock up the second slot, but Pullig had made an impressive showing in his short stint of practice. "(Preston's) got a lot of physical abil ity, he just needs to execute the things we want him to execute," Toledo said. "In my opinion, Corey Pullig is our starter. I think Corey is the best quar terback on our football team, and he de serves to be the starter — and if he's healthy he should be the starter." Preston said he had considered trans ferring, but decided that would have See Preston/Page 6 JESUS CHRIST SAID: “I AM.
