AUSTIN — Hillary Rodham Clinton thanked
Lady Bird Johnson, praised Gov. Ann Richards and
cheered for the Texas Tech Lady Red Raiders — at
the home of the Texas Longhorns, no less.
Clinton charged into Texas on Tuesday, the
stomping grounds of former first lady Barbara Bush,
and received an enthusiastic response to her speech
about overcoming spiritual decay.
It was Clinton's first public appearance since her
father's March 19 stroke.
Her half-hour dissertation, delivered without
notes, talked about a country struggling with "alien
ation and helplessness," and cities where there are
"too many girls with babies and angry boys with
guns."
She challenged Americans to study their values
and take care of their children.
"Reject cynicism and try to see others as you wish
to be treated," said Clinton, who added that she con
tinues to work to create a health care system that
covers all Americans.
Outside, about 15 protesters urged Clinton
push for govemhrent-run health insurance.
Barbara Vackar, an Austin'native, whoTTelps runa
bed and breakfast, said Clinton's speech was inspir
ing.
"It gave me renewed faith that people like her are
willing to speak up on the subject of the country hav
ing a spiritual void," Vackar said.
And some younger fans were equally impressed.
"She's not in ofnce but she should be," said Geri
Morris, a 13-year-old eighth-grader in Austin. "She
has the guts to stand up for what she believes in.'
While her philosophical speech won the favor of
the more than 5,000 people who filled the basketball
arena on the University of Texas campus, she also
won hearts for her sense of humor.
During a panel discussion that included Richards
and Sarah Weddington, who argued the nation's
landmark abortion case, Clinton said, "I am also
just to set the record straight — not really govern
ing."
