Academic Building Continued from Page 1 Woodcock said the preservation of the Aca demic Building was a high priority when the University restored the building's exterior sev eral years ago. "When the building was restored, enor mous pains were taken to maintain historical authenticity," he said. "The designers thought the Academic Building was very important to Texas A&M and were prepared to spend more money than necessary on a building of its im portance." The architect in charge of the restoration was anxious to retain the wooden windows on the building. Woodcock said. "He felt any alternate window would change the appearance and render it not the original building," he said. "After a consider able amount of discussion that went up to the Board of Regents, he won the argument." Woodcock said the current improvements seek to find a window that will serve as a com parable replacement, given the fact that Texas A&M wishes to use its money wisely and doesn't want windows requiring constant care. "There are a lot of wooden windows on the market available with vinyl insulation, which makes them easier to care for," he said. "They require less maintenance than plain wooden windows and are comparable in appearance with the windows that are there now/' Woodcock said he understands Texas A&M must work within a budget, however, he feels the University needs to take into account a re sponsibility to architectural heritage. "I think the Academic Building is an impor tant part of Texas A&M that deserves proper respect," he said.
