Thirty seats open this year
A&M faculty to elect
senators Wednesday
By ROBIN ROACH
The Battalion
Texas A&M University faculty members will go to the polls
Wednesday to elect Faculty Senate representatives.
The faculty will elect senators from Sterling C. Evans Library and
each of Texas A&M's 10 colleges. The number of senators from each
college is based on the college size.
Dr. John Quarles, speaker of the Senate and professor of medical
microbiology and immunology, said the Faculty Senate elections
usually experience a strong voter turnout.
The Senate has continued to gain more faculty support each year -
an impressive feat since it's a fairly new forum of representation, said
Dr. John Kochevar, chair of the election committee and associate
professor of pathology and laboratory medicine. The Senate was
established in 1981.
The Senate advises the University president on any matters
concerning the University community. "Anything of importance to the
University finds its way to the Senate for discussion," Kochevar said.
Although some of the decisions generated by the Senate concentrate
more on the faculty, Quarles said, its actions also directly affect the
students.
Thirty seats are open for election this year. Senators are elected for
three-year terms and are restricted to serving six years out of a nine-
year period.
The Senate replaces about one-third of the seats each year, and there
are currently 94 senators.
The newly-elected senators will begin their terms at a regular
Faculty Senate meeting in May. Absentee balloting is in progress
through today.
The regular election will be held April 7. Results will be released
after 5 p.m.

Thousands of people suffer
from allergies, and they don't
even know it.
Mysterious ailments, such as
perpetual colds and chronic
headaches, may actually be
allergy symptoms. These
discomforts can be eliminated
with proper diagnosis.
The following quiz can help
determine allergy potential:
•Do cold-like symptoms
persist for more than two
weeks, or happen at unlikely
times, such as on a trip?
♦Do you get cold symptoms
year-round, or more often than
other people?
•Do you have frequent eye
irritation (such as itching or
burning and tearing) without
direct cause?
•Do symptoms such as
runny nose, watery eyes and
sneezing appear quickly after
you change surroundings
(room, car inside/outside)?
• Do you experience frequent
unexplained headaches in
certain situations or places?
•Is nasal discharge clear and
thin rather than yellow and
cloudy?
• Do you experience frequent
sneezing episodes?
•Have you experienced
puffiness accompanied by
shiny discoloration around
your eyes?
If the answer was yes to four
or more of these questions, then
allergies could be the problem.
A family doctor or allergy
specialist offers thorough
examinations, and if warranted,
prescribe appropriate
medication. Some medications
act as "allergy blockers" to
prevent allergic reactions from
occurring in the first place.
