Amtrak starts
Tubularman
By Boomer Cardinale
coast-to-coast
railroad route
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW ORLEANS — Amid pre
dictions of a boom in rail passen
ger service and high-speed trains,
Amtrak christened the nation's
first transcontinental line
Wednesday with a Dixieland
band and a contingent of cos
tumed Walt Disney characters.
The Sunset Limited is no Mick
ey Mouse project as far as Amtrak
officials are concerned.
The train, which will take a
three-day route between Los An
geles and Miami, will be history's
first true coast-to-coast train in
the United States.
To create transcontinental
routes in the past, individual cars
were transferred from one train to
another.
Until Wednesday, the train op
erated between Los Angles and
New Orleans.
"This is the first time in 163
years in railroading history that
there has been a transcontinental
line," said Jim Larson, Amtrak's
assistant vice president of opera
tions. "We not only stand at the
threshold of improved rail ser
vice, but at the threshold of high
speed rail service."
The ceremony was held at
Union Station, constructed during
the bate 1950s as passenger rail
service was declining.
In the heyday of passenger rail
service. New Orleans was a major
transfer point for eastern and
western routes.
In recent years, the station has
served as a combination Grey
hound bus depot and a stop for a
limited number of Amtrak routes.
