1. Had to be a sport
where athletic ability would
help but would not be neces
sary.
2. Could still cause bodily
harm to an opponent.
3. Could get a killer tan.
We chose volleyball be
cause it met all the guide
lines we had set out and one
of us happened to own one.
So we start to play and
something amazing happens
- we actually could return
the ball back after a serve,
sometimes more than twice.
It certainly wasn't the great
est volleyball ever played,
but I bet it came close. How
couldn't it with these guys?
Tony: very good
Favorite Phrase: "I've
never played volleyball be
fore."
Weakness: Screws up on
purpose when he feels he's
playing too good
Rick: average
Favorite Shot: Get it back
over the net.
Weakness: Forgets that
there are out-of-bounds
markers
Jason: average
Favorite Rock Group: Led
Zeppelin
Weakness: Refuses to
dive for the ball because the
sand will get him dirty
Clay: very good
Favorite Volleyball Activ
ity: Kick sand on Jason
Weakness: Can't decide
to leave sunglasses on or off
Brad: average
Favorite Word: Haber
dashery
Weakness: Doesn't know
what haberdashery means.
I don't know which guy
broke my hand, so for right
now I'm going to blame it on
every one of them. The sad
thing is, none of this should
have happened because we
should have been playing
football. But now I get to
work on my killer tan.

Cougars.
In the first game of Saturday's
double-header, the Cougars could
not make up in batting what
A&M was doing to their depleted
infield and pitching staff, as A&M
out-muscled the Cougars 20-10.
A&M erupted against Houston
to go into the bottom of the sev
enth leading 20-3.
Seven Aggie batters finished
with two or more RBIs, including
David Minor's seventh-inning
grand slam to put the game on
ice.
Starter Trey Moore was lifted
in the top of the seventh, and the
Cougars got themselves seven
runs off reliever Jeff Jansky before
A&M's Kevin Bosse completed
the game.
A&M capitalized on UH coach
Bragg Stockton's makeshift mid
dle infield, with starting shortstop
Jason McDonald and third base-
man Ricky Freeman off the field.
Houston set a team record against
SWC opponents with seven er
rors, three by Freeman's replace
ment Pat Cauley. Also, Houston's
ace pitcher Wade Williams was
out for the series with tendonitis.
In the second game, A&M's
third starting lefthander Kelly
Wunsch struggled with his con
trol in the first inning, issuing
three walks and giving up two
run-scoring singles before being
lifted.
Wunsch, recovering from back
problems, was relieved by right
hander Chris Clemons. Clemons
struggled also, walking five be
fore being replaced at the bottom
of the third by Spencer McIntyre.
Houston gave starter Matt
Beech a seven-run lead in the first,
and after A&M got two in the top
of the second, Houston got their
seven-run lead right back, an
swering with two runs to lead 9-2.
However, A&M notched three
in the third, one in the fifth, and
led 14-9 after two four-run in
nings in the fifth and sixth.
Houston added three unearned
runs in the bottom of the sixth,
and John Codrington relieved
McIntyre and A&M got the third
out of the inning on a line drive
before the game was called.
On Sunday, UH knotted up the
score with two runs in the eighth
before A&M's closer Brian Parker
relieved.
Parker gave up the hit to tiethe
game, but got out of the eighth,
before running into trouble in the
bottom of the ninth. With runners
on first and second, two outs, and
a full count against UH's Carlos
Perez, Parker nailed an inside
strike as Perez watched, sending
the game into extra innings.
Harlan started a five-run out
burst in the eleventh, effectivelj
putting the game out of reach.
"They had us on our heels
where we had to respond," A&M
coach Mark Johnson said.
"It was weird, (but) you run
into them every once in awhile."
Spurs slam Mavs, draw bead on first
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
DALLAS — David Robinson
scored 20 of his 31 points in the
second half as the San Antonio
Spurs continued their dominance
of the Dallas Mavericks with a
114-107 victory Sunday night.
The Spurs defeated the Maver
icks for the 14th time in 15 meet
ings and swept this season's series
5-0.
Antoine Carr scored 21 points
for San Antonio, which led just
94-90 on Donald Hodge's dunk
with 5:28 left. Robinson then start
ed an 11-2 run with a three-point
play, and later added a free throw
and a dunk as the Spurs surged to
a 105-92 advantage.
Tim Legler scored a career-
high 19 points for the Mavericks,
who won three of their previous
six games while playing their best
ball of the season. Jim Jackson
added 18 points for Dallas, now 7-
61 this season.
Carr had two dunks in a 10-5
run in the final 5:26 of the third
period that turned a 71-70 deficit
into an 80-76 Spurs advantage.
Robinson, who scored eight
points in the third quarter, had 11
in the first period before picking
up his third foul with 1:52 left.
Robinson spent
the rest of the
half on the
bench.
Dallas took
advantage of
Robinson's ab
sence in the
middle, tying
San Antonio
60-60 at half
time on Morion
Wiley's third 3
Robinson
pointer of the half, with 8.0 sec
onds left.
Dallas shot 52 percent from the
field in the first half while San An
tonio hit 57 percent.
Robinson has been recently
slowed by a cyst in his right knee.
Last week, he scored only 10 and
nine points in road losses against
the New York Knicks and Cleve
land Cavaliers.
Robinson has received extra
treatment for the knee problems,
including an anti-inflammatory
injection.
"I'm very opposed to needles,"
Robinson said. "But I'm even
more opposed to pain. The sore
ness and swelling is down and
tonight I really felt like myself
again. It's tough playing when
you don't feel like you can jump."
Robinson converted 12 of 20
shots and added seven rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, he scored 12
points as San Antonio converted
65 percent of its field goal at
tempts.
"I saw the gleam in David's
eyes again," Carr said. "He's
pumped up. When he's playing
like that, no way people are going
to stop him. I think he's about to
go on one of those runs."
The Spurs also were motivated
when they learned that the Mid
west Division-leading Houston
Rockets fell 101-100 to the Min
nesota Timberwolves Sunday.
With the victory, San Antonio
pulled within a game of the Rock
ets in the division race.
"We're chasing them," Robin
son said. "If we want to win the
title, we've got to get going
There's not a lot of time left."
The Mavericks have showed
much improvement over the past
two weeks as Jackson, who ended
his holdout on March 4, continues
to get acclimated to the league.
Jackson hit eight of 15 shots
and added a career-high 11 assists
to tie a Mavericks rookie record.
The Mavericks are trying
avoid setting the league record f
fewest victories in a season, he
by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers
(9-73).
"If we keep doing this, we're
going to win our share of games,"
Mavericks coach Gar Heard said
"Overall I was pleased with the
outcome. The difference in the
game was at the free-throw line."
San Antonio Converted 32 of 3d
foul shots. Dallas was 12 of 17
from the line.
