Yoakam's new Reprise release, "This Time," lives up to his standard with a powerful mix of energy, passion and honky- tonk blues. Each song on the album has its own style, story and personality. The instrumentation on each single also stands out and adds to the songs' identity. The first single, "I Ain't That Lonely Yet," is the only song on the album not written or co-written by Yoakam. Kostas, who has written hit songs for Patty Loveless and others in Nashville, and James House wrote this powerful song that is rich with the standard See YOAKAM, Page 4 1 m£ mM: mm SSSiiiSSS pSps; Jifll lilt;: BRIAN MA Queen’s guitarist breaks out THE TRAGICALLY HIP By TODD STONE Former Queen guitarist Brian May has been faced with the diffi cult task of following up the suc cess of a musical group which sold more than 100 million albums over a 20-year span. With his original and crafty de but solo album, "Back To The Light," May demonstrates that he may be up to the task. The album features 12 tracks of intelligent, well-arrangeu rock n' roll augmented by clever explo rations into other musical genres such as blues, country and classical. May wrote Queen classics such as "Keep Yourself Alive," "Tie Your Mother Down" and "We Will Rock You." But Queen has been no more since lead vocalist Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1990, and May has gone solo. May's first project, started five years ago, does not rest on his pre vious musical laurels. "Back To The Light" offers a collection of fresh compositions heavily laced with multi-tracked guitar harmonies, contrasted by more raw solos. "The Dark" is an intriguing in- See MAY, Page 4 Third album is repetitious, fads to spark interest By JOE LEIH Almost every rock and roll band crafts, in nearly all original compo sitions, some kind of catchy musical hook to snag the listeners. The result of this creative musi- cality is a toe-tapping, head-bob bing, and basically get down and boogie reaction from the long haired rock fan subculture of the civilized world. Unfortunately, Canadian electric rock band The Tragically Hip fails to elicit any of the above reactions with their virtually hookless new album, "Fully Completely." All this quintet's new release manages to spark in the listener is a pathetic yawn and a stretch. The opening track, "Courage (for Hugh MacLennan)," is the first in dicator of the dark disease of tedi um that shrouds the album. Gor don Downie's vibrating vocals blend with the "ho-hum" guitar work of Bobby Baker and Paul Lan- glois resulting in relative obscurity, while Gord Sinclair's bass playing and Johnny Fay's drum beats casu ally limp along. Not one element of the song reaches out to capture the audience. Even the stan dard guitar solo, al most always the paramount of inten sity, sounds listless and dull in this in sipid track. To be blunt, this song- this album- is a ter rible bore. Yet, somehow the band does not com- See HIP, Page 4 DON'T CRACK UNDER PRESSURE Pear Shape Emerald/Princess Weight 1.02 F Sil Price $3575°° Weight 1.14 .73 G Si2/Il 2178°° .66 71 H Si2 2250°° .42 H VS1 820 00 Weight Oval Weight 9.51 2.81 H/I Si21 $11,977°° 1.53 I/J Si2 5800°° 2.48 1.09 H Sil 3631“ 2.34 1.03 I/J Sil/VS2 3512“ 2.10 .77 I Sil / Si2 2267“ 1.64 .71 E Si 2586“ 1.37 .56 G Si2 1175“ 1.12 Emerald Cut Princess Cut H H WS2 WS2 Price $5600°° 1850 00 Round Diamond Weight Marquise Cut 1.47 I/J Si2/I .90 F/G Si2 .89 I Si2/Il .83 D Si2 .75 G VS1/WS2 .71 F Si2 .62 I Si2/Sil .61 F Sil/VS2 .58 F Sil/Si2 .57 E VVS1 .54 H Si2 .46 H Sil/Si2 .46 I Si2 $4800°° 3500 00 2414 00 3900°° 3500 00 2750 00 1900 00 2080 00 1700 00 2565 00 1590 00 1354 00 1125°° 1.03 .96 .92 .86 .75 .72 .72 .71 .71 .65 .52 .52 .50 .46 .47 K F J H J K D G E I I/J E D G J G H J H/I J J G 11/12 II Si2 Si2 511 VS1 512 VS1/VVS2 Si2 Sil / Si2 VS2/VS1 VS1/VVS2 511 Sil/Si2 512 Si2/Il Si2 511 Si2/Il VS2 512 Si2 $29,500°° 9610°° 8900°° 10,500°° 6600°° 4795°° 4500°° 5300°° 3900°° 3208°° 2932°° 3475°° 2700°° 2300°° 1850°° 1750°° 1763°° 1108°° 700°° 1065°° 980°° 890°° TAG-Heuer SWISS MADE SINCE 1860. 0/2/2 dfunttzu n, y na.
