Sports Wednesday, March 24,1993 The Battalion Page 5 DON NORWOOD Sports Editor Sports, time often make for odd bedfellows H aving grown up the product of a family full of baseball and football players, I couldn't help but become a sports nut. It's been a fact of life for me as I annually plan my schedule around specific sporting events. I'm even con sidering getting a grassroots movement together to make major league baseball's open ing day a national holiday. Don't laugh. Hilary Rodham Clinton is a Cubs fan. I've come to the realization, how ever, that maybe I'm assigning sports a little too much importance, no matter what my job title says. The reason for the attitude switch is one of those realizations that slow ly creeps up on you, but turns out to be painfully obvious in the end. It has to do with time, and how fast it passes. Or doesn't pass. I have finally come to the conclu sion that the more ideal the situation surrounding my specific sports in terests the faster time passes, and vice versa. Like I said, it's so obvi ous that it took me 23 years to figure it out. Looking back at the past eight months, it's easy to see how this pat tern developed. August sped into late November as the Aggies soared to their 12-0 record. The month of December, as you might imagine, was a stark contrast. The capper was the first week of 1993. After Texas A&M lost to the See Norwood/Page 7 A&M bats outslug Bearkats 11-7 Four home runs propel Aggies By MICHAEL PLUMER The Battalion Sam Houston State University tried to give the Texas A&M baseball team a seri ous case of "Kat" scratch fever Tuesday night at Olsen Field, but A&M's bats suc cessfully repelled the attack. The second-ranked Aggies beat the Bearkats by a score of 11-7 behind the hit ting of catcher Robert Lewis, third base- man Lee Fedora and shortstop Robert Harris. With the victory, A&M improves its overall record to 26-3. "Sam Houston is winning games, and they always match up well against us," A&M coach Mark Johnson said. "I was proud of the way we hung in there tonight and battled." Sam Houston jumped on A&M start ing pitcher John Codrington right off the bat, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The damage could have been worse except for a great diving catch center- fielder Brian Thomas made on a liner off the bat of SHSU designated hitter Jamie Branham. "I think that play got us pumped up and ready to go," Thomas said. "They had already scored some runs, and I probably saved at least one run." Johnson was even more impressed with Thomas's defensive gem. "Brian Thomas made a major-league play," Johnson said. "That really got us going." First baseman Billy Harlan started off the home half of the first inning with a double and scored when Sam Houston catcher Rudi Garcia overthrew first base on A&M second baseman Eric Gonza lez's check swing roller in front of the plate. After Harris was robbed of a hit by Bearkat third baseman Heath Leay, Thomas was plunked by a pitch. Designated hitter Scott Smith struck out, and then Fedora, who was nam^d Southwest Conference Player of the See Victory/Page 6 ROBERT ]. REED/The Battalion A&M catcher Robert Lewis, far right, is congradulated by shortstop Robert Harris, middle, and pitcher Brian Parker after hitting the first of his two home runs against Sam Houston Tuesday night. Harris and centerfielder Brian Thomas also homered in the Aggies' 1 1 -7 victory over the Bearkats, their second of the season. Fedora earns Player of the Week honors By MICHAEL PLUMER The Battalion Texas A&M third baseman Lee Fedora capped off quite a weekend of play by being named the Southwest Conference Player of the Week Tuesday. Against Texas Christian last Saturday and Sunday, Fedora got seven hits in 11 at-bats as the second ranked Aggies took two out of three games from the Horned Frogs in SWC action. Fedora celebrated his 22nd birthday in style on Saturday by banging out four hits in the doubleheader, which included two home runs and six runs batted in. He continued his torrid hitting on Sun day/ registering three hits in four at-bats. For good measure, Fedora also scored three runs while stealing a base in his only attempt. "I have been swinging the bat real well lately, and the momentum I have built up has been nice," Fedora said. "I have been hitting the ball well recently." Fedora continued his hot streak Tues day night, gamering two hits, driving in one run and scoring two more in A&M's 11-7 victory over Sam Houston State. "Recently, I have been hooked-up, and everything has been dropping," Fedora said. "The best thing is I have been hit ting the ball hard." A&M coach Mark Johnson said he has been impressed with the sophomore in fielder's performance at the plate this sea son. "He has been making real good con tact for us, and I think that he is a key man in our lineup," Johnson said. "We need for his bat to stay hot." Fedora, an A&M Consolidated prod uct in his first season as a full-time starter at third for the Aggies, hit for a .636 aver age last week in games against TCU and the University of New Orleans.
