Ft. Worth jury convicts skinhead
for drive-by slaying of black man
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
FORT WORTH - An 18-year-
old skinhead convicted in a black
man's drive-by slaying was hand
ed a 10-year suspended sentenced
Tuesday.
The jury's decision sparked im
mediate outcry from the Metro-
plex's black leaders.
"Black folks' lives still ain't
worth a damn in Texas," said Dal
las County Commissioner John
Wiley Price. "I'm mad as hell."
"Until black folks start taking
to the streets, nothing is going to
happen."
Christopher William Brosky's
mother testified in the punish
ment phase of her son's murder
trial. Prosecutors did not call any
witnesses, and both sides rested
late Tuesday morning, said a
spokesman for state District Judge
Everett Young.
"I don't know why he got
what he got," Carolyn Thomas,
widow of Donald Thomas, said of
the jury's sentence. "But I'm go
ing to keep moving on and keep
fighting because I know one day
I'm going to win somehow."
Brosky faced punishment rang
ing from probation to life impris
onment tor the 1991 attack on
Thomas, who was killed by a
shotgun blast as he sat on a
flatbed truck drinking beer with
some white friends in Arlington.
"I'm totally shocked and dis
appointed," said Willie Starr, a
member of the NAACP in Fort
Worth. "Only when something
like this happens in your back
yard can you understand what
happened in Los Angeles in the
King trial."
Brosky, who is white, showed
little emotion Monday as Young
announced the verdict, but later
burst into tears as he hugged his
mother and his girlfriend. Mrs.
Thomas said she was pleased
with Monday's verdict.
"If you believe in the Lori
he'll make things happen for you
and he did," said Mrs. Thomas.
Trial testimony showed tha!
Brosky and two other skinheads,
William George "Trey" Roberts
III and Joshua Hendry, bothl/,
had planned a drive-by shootin|
tne morning of June 7,1991.
Roberts, who has admitted ht
fired the shotgun blast that killed
Thomas, and Hendry have boll
pleaded guilty to the murder
Roberts was certified to stand trial
as an adult and received a 40-yeai
sentence in exchange for his testi
mony.
Hendry pleaded guilty injuvs-
nile court and received a 15-yeai
sentence that will be reviewed ii
June when he turns 18.
Meanwhile, Hendry was held
at the Lynn Ross Juvenile Deten
tion Center.
Both Hendry and Roberts testi
fied against Brosky during the tri

FBI doubts alibi
in minister’s case
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - An
FBI affidavit filed Tuesday in
the attempted murder trial of
former Dallas minister Walker
Railey casts new suspicions on
Railey's whereabouts the night
his wife was attacked.
The document says Railey
was nowhere near the Southern
Methodist University campus
but only 2.25 miles from his
own home when he placed a
mobile phone call now critical to
the state's case.
Prosecutors maintain the
April 22, 1987, phone call lies at
the heart of an alibi Railey de
vised to cover his activities that
night.
It was this call, recorded on
his home answering machine,
that Railey said was made about
10:30 p.m. while he\was driving
between libraries on the SMU
campus.
Tne swbm FBI affidavit says
in fact the call was placed at
12:04 a.m. and Railey was 6.5
miles from the campus.
The document was attached
to a defense motion to suppress
DNA test results the state hopes
will show that Railey wrote a
series of threatening letters to
himself shortly before the as
sault on his wife.
Prosecutors insist the letters
also were part of a complex
sell erne to divert suspicion else
where once he disposed of his
wife.
Cult leader still
rejects FBI offers
WACO (AP) — Doomsday
cult leader David Koresh contin
ues to reject FBI concessions, in
cluding an offer of a national ra
dio pulpit when he surrenders to
authorities who have surrounded
the Branch Davidian compound
for 24 days.
Koresh had until noon Tuesday
to accept the FBI's offer of access
to the Christian Broadcasting Net
work on his surrender, but the
deadline passed without word
from inside the Mount Carmel
compound.
"He will probably not be able
to get as generous a response from
us (again)," FBI special agent Bob
Ricks said.
The agreement, which included
assurances Koresh would be able
to contact his followers in the
McLennan County Jail, was dis
missed "out of hand," during ne
gotiations Monday, Ricks saick
"Basically he said it's not worth
the paper it's printed on," Ricks
said.
Although Koresh rejected the
radio outlet, one of his followers
calleLl a Dallas radio station to
give his version of the Feb. 28 raid
by agents of the federal Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
NEW YORK (AP) - The al
leged ringleader of the terrorist
gang that bombed the World Trade
Center has been arrested overseas,
ABC-TV reported Tuesday night.
ABC reported on its "Night-
line" program that U.S. agents had
flown to "a foreign country" to ar
rest Mahmoud Abouhalima. The
network said a government official
had asked it not to identify the
country to protect the agents' Safe
ty-
Two other suspects will be ar
rested in the United States in the
next few days, completing the "nu
cleus" of the group that plotted the
bombing, ABC said. It did not
identify any of its sources by name.
WNBC-TV, also quoting
unidentified sources, reported on
its local newscast that Abouhali
ma, a New Jersey taxi driver,
would be arraigned Wednesday.
Asked about the reports, f?I
spokesman Steve Markardt said.
"I don't know what's goingoal
have nothing on this."
Earlier Tuesday/ FBI agent
James Esposito said more bomb
ing suspects may still be loose in
the United States. Esposito, who
heads the FBI's Newark, N.J., of
fice, said investigators have nar
rowed their list of remaining sus
pects.
Officer tells jurors
King used drugs
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The
policeman who supervised the
Rodney King beating roared like
a lion on the witness stand Tues
day to imitate King's reaction to
being shocked with an electronic
stun gun. He also said he was
sure King was on PCP.
Sgt. Stacey Koon told jurors he
decided to tire his Taser gunat
King after King threw five offi
cers off his Ij^ck. . 1
"When I saw that move, thai
was 100 percent confirmation
that Rodney King was on PCP,"
said Koon. "T believed he had
thrown approximately 800
pounds of officers off his back."
Although toxicological tests
showed no trace of PCP in King's
system, the defense maintains of
ficers were justified in treating
him as a drug suspect because of
his behavior. The drug can give
users superhuman strength.
Koon, Officers Laurence Pow
ell and Theodore Briseno and for
mer Officer Timothy Wind, who
are white, are accused of violat
ing the black motorist's federal
civil rights in the March 3,1991,
videotaped beating after officers
had chased his speeding car.
The officers' acquittal of most
brutality charges after a state trial
set off deadly riots in die city.
Agents find third
suspect in bombing
Yeltsin
Continued from Page 1
through his U.S.-backed reform
programs.
Kozyrev insisted: "Everything
is OK and under control." He said
ways will be sought for coopera
tion among democrats, "with a
small and with a capital D," in
Moscow and in Washington.
After lunch with Christopher at
the State Department, the foreign
minister went on to meet with
Secretary of Defense Les Aspin at
the Pentagon and then with
House Speaker Thomas S. Foley,
Senate Democratic Leader George
J. Mitchell and Senate Republican
Leader Robert Dole of Kansas on
Capitol Hill.
Next month, the Clinton ad
ministration will ask Congress to
approve a large boost in U.S. tech
nical aid to Russia, from $417 mil
lion to about $700 million.
Kozyrev is due to see Clinton at
the White House on Wednesday,
when a decision is likely on
whether the April 3-4 summit
now scheduled for Vancouver,
Canada, will be shifted. Moving it
to Moscow would allow Yeltsin to
maintain a close watch on his op
ponents' efforts to reverse his as
sumption of special powers and to
derail the April 25 national refer
endum he proposes to gain the
people's endorsement.
Clinton said he might speak to
Yeltsin about the summit site and
date after getting "a direct, first
hand appraisal" from Kozyrev, at
the moment, the president said,
there was no request to make a
change.
