The other hostages held with Ambassador Alfonso Robelo were believed to be mostly embassy workers, police spokesman Marino Donato said. Nineteen people work in the embassy. The motive for the attack was not immediately known, officials said. Bijt Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Ernesto Leal said the attackers were politically motivated. He did not elaborate. Leal added that Nicaraguan officials planned to negotiate with the attackers. A radio station said Security Minister Luis Fishman spoke witn the attackers, who asked for two planes to leave Costa Rica. Police had surrounded the embassy, but Leal said they had drawn back at the request of the attackers. Police said the men, armed with AK-47 machine guns and other heavy weapons, entered the embassy about 3 p.m. Angioplasty kills women more often, study reports THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DALLAS — Women are 10 times more likely than men to die in the hospital after undergoing angioplasty, a procedure that uses a tiny balloon to reopen clogged heart arteries, a new study indicates. Of 2,134?. paints who underwent the surgery during 1985 or 1986 at one of 16 medical centers across the United States, four of the 1,590 men and 14 of the 546 women died without leaving the hospital, the study said. Twelve of the 14 women who died during the procedure were 65 or older, said the study, published in the March issue of Circulation, a scientific journal of the Dallas-based American Heart Association. Angioplasty is one of two popular techniques used to restore blood supply to the heart's muscle through the coronary arteries. It involves inserting a thin tube with a tiny deflated balloon on its tip into a vein or artery in the arm and pushing until the tip reaches a disease-narrowed artery. When the balloon is inflated, the narrowed segment of the artery is dilated or widened. The balloon procedure is done to spare patients the trauma of open-heart surgery, in which a blood vessel from the leg or chest is used to construct a detour around the diseased part of a coronary artery. Wilson said he believes the charges were politi cally motivated and raised to discredit the agree ments that were signed. "Ever since the (presidential) election there has been evidence that they would like to change archivist," he said. "There was a strong feeling that the election called for changes everywhere." As Bush Library Center director, Wilson will be involved in the library's construction and coordina tion with the various components of A&M. He will not handle the documents that will go into the li brary which is expected to open in 1997. The library's director will be appointed by the next U.S. archivist when the library is completed, Wilson said. Wilson was nominated as U.S. archivist by Presi dent Reagan in 1987. He also served as director of the Gerald R. Ford Library and Museum in Ann Ar bor and Grand Rapids, Mich, from 1981-1987 and as deputy director of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Li brary in Abilene, Kan. from 1974-1978. Wilson said he does not feel like he is taking a step back from being U.S. archivist. "I'm excited about being affiliated with A&M," he said. "That's a better job than being archivist of the United States any day in my book. It's a very excit ing move for me plus the opportunity to teach and do research." Contrary to the belief that Wilson was hired by George W. Bush Jr. and Dr. William Mobley, Texas A&M University president, Wilson said Mobley and Gage were the ones who did the hiring. Dr. George Edwards, director of presidential studies, was unavailable to comment on this story until April.
