Sluder, a political science major
' 11
from Richardson. "But overall It
looked like we had a lot of sup
port."
The student regent bill,
cosponsored by Rep. Sherri
Greenberg and Rep. Steve Ogden,
will create a non-voting student
position in all, 11 state university
governing boards.
Sluder said Beller and other
students who gave testimony all
spoke in support of the bill.
"They told the committee that
there needs to be a voice for stu
dents that regents can go to in a
meeting," he said.
Rob Giesecke, Ogden's
spokesman, said Ogden empha
sized the rising cost of being a
student and told the committee if
someone is asked to pay more,
they should have a say about how
the money is used.
"Students are the customers,"
Giesecke said. "The idea is that
students are being asked to pay
the rising cost of education and
they should have a voice."
Sluder said the only opposition
to the bill concerned the right that
students already have to attend
meetings. A few representatives
felt students should already be
able to accomplish the same
things a student regent would.
"We brought up the fact that
most students don't have enough
time to prepare for a regent meet
ing," he said. "A student regent
would be able to do that."
Another concern is that stu
dents from other schools in the
A&M System have not had the
opportunity to voice their con
cerns at the Board's meetings,
Sluder said.
If approved, the new bill
would allow one student from
each system school to have an op-
portunity at the new position.
The governor would make the fi
nal appointment.
No matter what school a stu
dent came from, he or she would
represent all students in the sys
tem.
Sluder said the students told
the committee they weren't look
ing for a voting position or access
to closed session at this point.
"We just want to have a voice,"
he said. "We told them that it
would be mutually beneficial."

RESEARCH
Panic
Do you experience brief, unexpected periods of intense fear or
discomfort?
Have you visited your doctor or the hospital emergency room because of
chest pains, shortness of breath, numbness or tingling sensations and
find out that you have no physical problems?
These occurrences may have been panic attacks.
VIP Research is conducting a study on Panic Disorder. Individuals
with symptoms of panic attacks are being recruited to participate
in a three month study of an investigational medication for the
treatment of panic disorder. If you would like more information,
call VIP Research. $200.00 will be paid to those individuals who
qualify and complete the study.
