Friday, March 5,1993 The Battalion Page 3 Aggies Continued from Page 1 to show their dedication to God. "It's not important what you are giving up, it's that you are willing to do so," Pala said. In the Islamic faith, Muslim people practice the five pillars of faith in order to show their devo tion to God. The fifth pillar is fasting dur ing Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. The Muslim calendar follows a lunar cycle, is 354 days long and has 12 months. During Ramadan, Muslim peo ple abstain from eating, drinking and having sex between dawn and sundown. Hosame Abu-Amara, adviser for the Muslim Student Associa tion, said "Ramadan is something that was ordained by our reli gion." Like Lent, Muslim people give up luxuries for spiritual fulfill ment. "We forsake our earthly plea sures to get closer to Allah," Abu- Amara said. "This gives up a chance to get closer to the god we worship." Abu-Amara said celebrating Ramadan has more than a reli gious significance. "It's become part of our cultur al heritage and not just religious heritage, he said. "Even people that aren't particularly religious fast during Ramadan." Dr. S.G. Mestrovic, sociology of religion professor, said the ob servance of these and other reli gious holidays is fading in Ameri ca. "People are saying we are liv ing in post-modernist times which means more selfishness," he said. "Tradition is seen as something more negative." Holidays such as Lent and Ra madan are especially traditional to their respective faiths, Mestro vic said. "What these religions are telling us is that sacrifice to the group is more important than fo cusing on yourself," he said. Although Lent and Ramadan originally were celebrated for spiritual reasons, Mestrovic said observance of these holidays has changed. "I think the original meanings have been lost," he said. "Ameri ca is a very fast-moving, post modern, anti-traditional place. Catholicism and Islam are going to have a difficult time continuing their traditional holidays in America." Student Continued from Page 1 were at the hall shortly after 11 p.m. to talk with Walton residents who may have been traumatized by the suicide. Birch said they will continue to monitor the progress of the resi dents. "We try to get a reading of how things are going," he said. "We'll decide then if we need to have anymore meetings with the residents." Birch said the counselors can only make the students aware of the counseling services offered. "We can't force anyone into counseling but we can make sure they know it is available," he said. Tom Murray, an associate di rector of student affairs, said they are trying to locate a new room for the roommate. The room will not be used again this semester. 4 What's Up Friday KANM 99.9 Cable FM: "Out in th Open" is a weekly gay and lesbian radio news show every Friday from 6-7:00 p.m. Call the Gayline at 847-0321 for more in formation.
