Consider abstinence an
investment in happiness
1 was encouraged by Janet Holder's mature, in
sightful column entitled "Respect Better Than Pre
marital Sex." 1 suspect that Holder's words may
well be received with incredulity and derision by
various campus groups. Thus, I write to show my
support.
My wife and I have been married almost 19
years, and I can truthfully say she is the only per
son with whom I have had sexual intercourse. Al
though I speak only from personal experience, 1
agree with Holder that greatest benefits of sexual
intercourse can only occur within the confines of
marriage. The term "intimacy" accurately reflects
the psychological as well as physical aspects
shared by man and wife in the loving and com
forting sexual experience.
^realize that college is a time of experimenta
tion. However, I join with Holder in encouraging
students to abstain from inappropriate sexual be
havior and consider their abstinence an invest
ment toward their future marital happiness.
Finally, I would take issue with one of Holder's
comments regarding the lack of human honesty.
It has been my observation in 11 years at A&M
that the vast majority of its students are friendly,
hardworking and honest. 1 urge present and fu-

When Lee began to talk about Malcolm X, thevol
ume of his microphone was not properly adjusted
until Lee requested to increase the volume. Sec
ondly, the Lee spoke in the dark for more than
five minutes before a spotlight was shined on him
Furthermore, when it was announced that Lee
was unable to hold the discussion session after the
film, I think the person in charge of the event
should have come out to the stage and apologized
to the audience in person; not just announced
over the speakers. I was very much disappointed
and irritated by such irresponsible and impolite
behavior.
Perhaps some world forgive those in charge
because they said that the "accidental-cancella-
tion-without-any-legitimate-excuses" was beyond
their control. However, should we be confident in
their future programs —such as the "An Evening
with Lady Margaret Thatcher"? Good Luck to all
of you!

Film festival handling of
Lee disappoints audience
I am writing in response to Roy Parson's letter
entitled "Spiked message at Texas Film Festival."
1 attended the screening of "Malcolm X" and
heard Spike Lee speak about the movie and why
he makes films.
Lee said that his intent in making films is to
hold up a mirror to society. If that image is ugly,
he said that he hopes some kind of dialogue on
the topic begins. He cautioned that he offers no
solutions to the problems he presents and that he
is only a filmmaker.
This is certainly not a message of reverse dis
crimination. Instead it is a message to think open
mindedly about the problems that face our soci
ety. Spike Lee should be encouraged to continue
to hold up his mirror to society. We can only cre
ate positive change by seeing ourselves for who
we really are.
I am sure many people went to watch "Mal
colm X" on the opening night of the Texas Film
Festival as I did. Regardless how one feels about
the movie, is it worth paying $8 or even $12 for
one movie and waiting about 5-10 minutes after
the show for Spike Lee?
Like many who went to the show and paid $8
or $12, I expected the peak would be at the discus
sion after the film, not at the end of the movie it
self. The Texas A&M Film Society had advertised
about an after-show discussion before tickets
went on sale. If I had known there would be no
discussion after the film, 1 would not pay more
than $4 for the movie. Probably most people
would not pay that much money, nor would they
even spent the time to come to the show.
In addition to the unexpected cancellation, I
think the Lee's introduction was poorly managed.
