Hesse.
"Losing a lead like that is more
mental than it is physical because
we used a deep rotation," Hickey
said. "We need to learn to play
more confidently because we lose
our defensive intensity during
different parts of the game."
Once again Branch stepped up,
grabbing two defensive rebounds
with less than a minute left. Two
free throws by Burket sealed the
victory at 79 -74.
"We had another good lead
like in the LSU game that we al
most let slip away," said Burket.
"We need to get a killer instinct so
we hopefully can start to put
away games."
Hickey was also scared that it
might turn out to be a carbon
copy of the Houston and LSU
games.
"It was a big win, and we real
ly needed that," Hickey said.
"But, we can't be satisfied with
this win because of the way we
played."
The Lady Aggies, who move to
9-5 overall with a 2-1 conference
record, will conclude their three-
game homestand on Wednesday
as they host Southern Methodist
University.

The DMN held the story
he won't pay any attention to that
particular source again.
Someone hates A&M
With football signing day little
more than a week away, someone
from another school in this state
could be trying to scare recruits
away from A&M by cooking up a
scandal that would make serious
sanctions appear immenent.
The News might have given
A&M officials an opportunity to
respond, as they did before the
original story ran back in Decem
ber.
If that is the case, then the sto
ry will probably run in two Sun
days when the DMN needs to sell
papers. A scandal of this magni
tude would sell lots of them, and
since the Cowboys are in the Su
per Bowl the News is virtually as
sured of having a big seller this
coming weekend.
In a sport where the focus is
almost always on the player that
scores the most points, Texas
A&M freshman point guard Lisa
Branch seems to be enjoying her
self by giving instead of receiving.
Saturday's 79-74 win over
Texas Christian turned out to be a
showcase for Branch's ability to
spark the A&M offense with her
Southwest Conference record 19
assists, a total that broke the pre
vious record of 18, which was set
in 1983 by Baylor's Darlene
Primeaux and tied in 1988 by
Arkansas's Donna Wilson.
Her assist total does not tell the
whole story about Branch's play
making ability, however. Against
TCU, all but two players finished
the game without scoring a point.
Four of those Lady Aggies scored
in double figures, with Branch
scoring 12 herself.
"She's a great player," A&M's
Beth Burket said. "She creates a
lot of our shots."
Branch also has a knack for
creating a lot of her own shots.
The DeSoto native entered last
week leading the team in scoring
with 11.4 points per game.
Once Branch found out at half
time that the assist record was in
reach, though, the scoring part of
the game took a back seat.
"I'm pretty excited tonight,"
Branch said, unable to hide her
emotions.
"It was like every person I
passed it to, they made their
shots.
"I though that it (the record)
was 14. But l just told the girls
that I really wanted that record."
Branch almost did not make it
into the starting lineup against
TCU, as she injured her right
shoulder in the Louisiana State
game on Jan. 20. A&M head
coach Lynn Hickey had Bambi
Ferguson penciled in at the point
against TCU, with Branch coming
off of the bench.
One quick recovery later, the
most vocal member of Hickey's
stellar freshman class had her
name etched in the SWC record
books.
