Marshall, the great-grandson
of a slave, was born in Baltimore,
the son of William and Norma
Marshall, and grew up in com
fortable but not affluent circum
stances.
His father was a headwaiter in
private clubs. His mother was a
schoolteacher.
”My father,” he once recalled.
"never told me to become a
lawyer. But he turned me into one
by teaching me to argue, to prove
every statement I made, and by
challenging my logic at every
point.”
A penchant for playful misbe
havior in grade school was re
sponsible for introducing the
young Marshall to the Constitu
tion. He was forced to memorize a
portion of the document each
time he was disciplined.
"Before I left that school, I
knew the whole thing by heart,"
Marshall once said.

Miscellaneous
Russell-McCloud said African-American students should not sit
passively and accept the current college curriculum.
"At your institutions of higher learning, you have to ensure the cur
riculum," she said. "You have to ensure inclusion. You have to be cer
tain that you are not omitted and made secondary."
Elizabeth Branch, who is director of recruitment and retention at
Tarrant County Junior College, said students must remember that
African-Americans have contributed to American history.
"The students can benefit most from her (Russell-McCloud) reaffir
mation of how much blacks have contributed to the history of America
and that sometimes escapes us," said Branch.
Russell-McCloud said African-Americans will play an increasingly
important role in the future because people of color are no longer the
minority.
"Two-thirds of the whole world is comprised of people of color,"
she said.
"When is it that two-thirds of anything, even with new math, con
stituted a minority?"
Since the minority has become the majority, African-Americans
iieed leaders who are sensitive to the system and understand racial
tensions, she said.

Bailey said she feels Stark
made a big difference in the lives
of thousands of Texas A&M stu
dents.
"He generally loved students,"
she said. "He enjoyed meeting
students and finding out about
them, their interests, how they
were doing in school and how
they could do better.
"Meeting the students helped
him decide what they wanted and
needed from the University," Bai
ley said. "There's no w'ay to esti
mate how many lives he
touched."
Stark's had a unique ability to
identify people with great talent
and a desire to do special things,
Reynolds said.
"Wayne could go into the MSC
cafeteria, which he did frequently,
and introduce himself to stu
dents," he said. "He had a
tremendous passion for meeting
students and finding out about
them, and he always managed to
single out special people."
Stark also had an uncanny abil
ity to meet and enlist support
from former students and mem
bers of the community, Reynolds
said.
"He had thousands of contacts
with former students and other
people he could influence to do
special things for Tgxas A&M," he
said. "He could engage them in
conversation and in a few mih-‘
utes have th#m talking about the
MSC or other projects at the Uni
versity."
Stark was involved with vari
ous arts and civic activities in
Bryan-College Station and across
the state, and was a former presi
dent of the Association of College
U nions-lnterna tional.
Stark was awarded the Andy
Anderson Award by the Arts
Council of the Brazos Valley in
1985, and he received the Distin
guished Achievement Award for
Individual Student Relationships
from the Texas A&M Association
of Former Students.

he stopped performing abortions.
"It is an unfortunate horror and holocaust that we are living here to
day," said Robinson, who performed abortions until he became a
Christian.
"We kill about 4,000 babies everyday, and there's not a single line in
the newspaper," he said. "Something you know is morally wrong can
be made into something 'politically correct'."
Ann Bradley of BVCPS said the service is a "bright spot on the hori
zon" which offers "hope to those who think their lives are hopeless."
Bradley said adoption is an alternative to abortion.
"Not all people who get pregnant kill their babies," she said. "They
want to give them life."
Adoption as an option was the topic of Melody Thompson's testi
mony as she told the crowd of her experience with an "open adoption"
in which the birth mother and adoptive parent or parents meet.
Not everyone at the rally agreed with what the speakers said
though they respected their right to say it.
"They try to make it seem like being a Christian and being Pro-
Choice are incompatible," said Carrie Thrasher, Aggie Democrats his
torian.
