Man guns down ex-wife at daughte

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS . , u a ,:_ w. foil
MIAMI - The FBI in Texas
Wednesday captured a man who
blamed his ex-wife for their
daughter's suicide and gunned
her down in front of a television
camera near the child's grave, po
lice said.
Emilio Nunez, 34, attempted to
pull a pistol on federal agents who
stopped a Greyhound Bus bound
for Los Angeles near Fort Stock-
ton, Texas, but he was disarmed
and arrested, said Lt. Lou Cavallo
of the North Lauderdale Police
Department.
"It was a border patrol simula
tion, a routine alien check. Every
one exited from the bus, a struggle
ensued. He went for his weapon
that was in his pouch, and he was
restrained," Cavallo said at a news
conference late Wednesday.
The detective said officers took
a 9mm stainless steel automatic
handgun from Nunez. Cavallo
said investigators believe it was
the same gun Nunez of Delray
Beach, used to kill his former wife
Monday at a South Florida ceme
tery.
Police received a tip through
Dade County Crimestoppers Tues
day evening that Nunez was on
the bus. He faces state murder
charges and federal charges for
unlawful flight, Cavallo said.
Nunez, who was arrested about
2:30 p.m. CST, was being held
pending his arraignment Thurs
day in Midland, Texas, about 90
miles northeast of Fort Stockton,
authorities said. North Lauderdale
police said they're seeking his ex
tradition.
Pecos County Sheriff Bruce
Wilson said about nine or 10 law
enforcement officers, from the FBI,
U.S. Border Patrol and the Pecos
County Sheriff's Office, met the
Greyhound bus in Fort Stockton,
about 380 miles west of Dallas.
Earlier Wednesday, the FBI con
tacted Texas officials to tell them
Nunez could be on the bus. Feder
al officers then distributed photos
of Nunez so the arresting officers
would recognize him.
The bus arrived in Fort Stock-
ton at 2:25 p.m. on a regularly
scheduled stop.
North Lauderdale Det. Robert
Edgerton said Nunez was travel
ling with a male companion.
The man, who police would not
identify, was not an active partici
pant in Nunez's interstate flight
and was not detained, Edgerton
said.
The Florida slaying occurred as
Nunez was being interviewed
Monday for the Spanish-language
program "Occurrio Asi," or "It
Happened Like This," a show sim
ilar to "A Current Affair" and
"Hard Copy."
He and the television crew
were at the North Lauderdale
cemetery where his 15-year-old
daughter, Yoandra Nunez, is
buried. She killed herself Thanks
giving Day.
On the videotape, shown Tues
day on the Telemundo network
and rebroadcast around the coun
try, Nunez told reporter Ingrid
Cruz that his daughter was
abused by his ex-wife, Maritza
Martin Munoz, 33.
He alleged that the girl com
mitted suicide after her mother
slapped her when the teen-ager
revealed she was pregnant.
When the ex-wife pulled up to
the scene, apparently by coinci
dence, the tape showed Nunez
pushing past Cruz and camera
man Jorge Delgado to fire into
Martin's head at point-blank
range.
As the reporter and cameraman
fled, Nunez stood over Martin
and fired repeatedly.
"I should have done it a long
time ago!" he said afterward in
Spanish.

Politicians want Hispanic leader for school district
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SAN ANTONIO — Minority politicians and ac
tivists are protesting a decision to hire a white chan
cellor for the Alamo Community College District.
The protesters say they want a Hispanic chancel
lor because of the large percentage of minority stu
dents in the three-school district.
A standing-room-only crowd waved placards and
shouted Tuesday night as trustees voted 5-4 to select
Robert Ramsay of New Jersey as chancellor to suc
ceed interim Chancellor Doug Harlan. Harlan also is
white.
City Councilman Juan Solis, four state representa
tives and members of the League of United Latin
American Citizens, the National Association of Gov
ernment Employees and Frontline 2000 spoke against
Ramsay's selection.
Maria Berriozabal, former councilwoman and one
time mayoral candidate, warned there will be "out
rage in the streets" if a Hispanic chancellor isn't
hired.
"A lot of people have talked about how important
it is to have role models. 1 don't think you know
what it means to us as Hispanic people," Ms.
Berriozabol said.
"I really think that you should be ashamed of
A', :• . M A \ *
yourselves."
Community leaders from the city's east side,
where much of the population is black, also criticized
the board.
"It is time for San Antonio to come of age and
choose a Hispanic chancellor of the ACCD," said east
side activist T.C. Calvert.
Trustees Janelle McArthur, Judy Millspaugh,
George Killen, John MacKenzie and Chairman Jerry
Gonzalez voted to hire Ramsay.
Michael Rodriguez, Richard Gonzalez, Art Her
rera and Donald McClure voted against the move.
At one point, audience members called Jerry Gon
zalez a "coconut" for supporting Ramsay.
The ethnic slur refers to Hispanics who allegedly
are "brown on the outside but white on the inside.”
Three of the four dissenters said they preferred
hiring William Vega, 50, a Hispanic and president of
Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley,
Calif.
Ramsay, 48, president of Camden County College
in Blackwood, N.J., is expected to assume his duties
no later than June 1.
His contract calls for a four-year term and a
$125,000 salary.
Ramsay will be replacing black Chancellor Ivory
Nelson.
Lubbock voters
recall Bush's
famous words
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LUBBOCK - The city
dubbed George Bush’s "Pulse
of America" watched with
some sadness Wednesday as
the former West Texan left the
White House.
Lubbock earned barometer
status in March 1989, when
Bush mentioned a phone con
versation with friend and inde
pendent oil investor Robert W.
Blake of Lubbock.
"I talked to a fellow from
Lubbock, Texas, the other day
which was the best phone call
I've made. And he said, 'All
the people in Lubbock think
things are going just great,'"
Bush told reporters.
Wednesday, folks wished
well to Bill Clinton, the candi
date who won 27 percent of
Lubbock County votes.
"It's a sad day for us," said
Blake, who met Bush at a 1951
touch football game in Mid
land. "Although he's going
out, we still want Clinton to do
a good job."
