Stephen Beachy, director of Parks and Recreation for the City of College Station, said the site for the park was extremely sensitive to the recent rains because of its location on a flood plain. "The weather has certainly hampered the completion of the project," Beachy said. After construction is complet ed, Beachy said any problems caused by future rains should be minimized, and the park will re quire only a basic cleaning-up of debris. The park will feature an out door amphitheater which seats 5,000 spectators and holds up to 100 musicians or performers on the stage. The amphitheater will be surrounded by a man-made lake, concrete trails, pedestrian bridges across the lake, a play ground, restrooms and a picnic shelter. Beachy said the amphitheater was designed to withstand in clement weather. T’ ^es:gn includes concrete and o -ry with all electrical system^ located above the maxi mum flood level. Beachy hopes the park will be ready for its grand opening date of April 2. If not, the park should open in May. The city has already scheduled events for this spring in the new amphitheater. Program Supervi sor Sheila Walker said the only problem the city has encountered is setting a completion date. "We don't want to let it sit un used for two months while we wait for a grand opening," she said. Walker said the city has planned many events for this spring, provided weather cooper ates. The College Station Jazz Fes tival is scheduled April 24. Also, the Children's Movie series, local and regional talent showcases, as well as a possible Shakespeare se ries are planned. "We do have a big population of interest and we try to do some things that are good for them," Walker said. The majority of funds for the project came from the City of Col lege Station. The park was first proposed in March of 1987. "I was told that the bad weath er Thursday delayed their (rail road workers) work," said Pat Williams, area engineer for the Texas Department of Transporta tion. The department was notified by Union Pacific Railroad officials that the project required more than the two days originally esti- See Constrution/Page 12 KYLE BURNETT [The Battalion An unidentified construction worker continues work on the railroad tracks near FM 2818 and Wellborn road.
