Local $e3 The Battalion Monday, January 18 1993 i-CS construction, economy expands, officials say By WILL HAL THE BATTALION Ihe number of building per is issued in both Bryan and ilege Station increased in 1992, jaling new growth in construc- .sand a strengthening economy jfthe twin cities, local officials i Sryan experienced strong strth in both the residential and mmercial sectors. Permits for •{le family houses rose 82 per- intin 1992 while commercial iing permits increased by 33 jtent. Joe Brown, public information officer for the City of Bryan, said he was "very pleased" with the in crease in building permits. He said the growth has occurred in part because of the good reputa tion Bryan has earned in recent years. The dollar value of permits in Bryan increased by $4 million from 1991 to 1992. Overall, the number of permits issued by the City of Bryan grew by 9 percent in 1992. College Station saw a similar increase as dollar values grew from $41.2 million to $42.6 mil lion. The total number of permits Twin cities report increase in issuance of building permits throughout 1992 grew from 552 in 1991 to 806 last year. The increase in building per mits is especially good news for Bryan. The town was heavily de pendent on oil during the '80s, and its economy struggled along with the oil industry as oil prices sunk. Brown said the Bryan econo my has since diversified and re covered from the oil bust. Jane Kee, senior planner for the City of College Station, said Col lege Station experienced little new construction as well during most of the '80s, but since then, con struction has increased. "Those who lost their homes (in the oil bust) have had 10 years to recover and are getting back into the housing market," Kee said. Remodeling also increased as the number of permits increased by 22 percent in Bryan and by 19 percent in College Station. Susan Cole, building technician for the City of College Station, said commercial permits have in creased because many establish ments in Post Oak Mall are mov ing and remodeling. "We can't keep up with all the permits," she said. Cole said there has been a sig nificant increase in the number of housing developments because "low interest rates have made it cheaper to buy a house than to rent." John Clark, real estate broker and co-owner of a local Re-Max realty, said interest rates are at the lowest levels in 15 years and have remained steady for the past 12 months. Construction on apartments and duplexes in College Station remained stagnant for 1992, as there were no new permits for apartments and only four for du plexes. No permits for apartment construction were issued in Bryan as well. "Rental (rates) need to be higher to justify construction," Clark said. Still, he predicts new permits for apartment construc tion will be issued this year. Brown said there is a lot of profit potential for apartment de velopers in Bryan and College Sta tion. link, A&M lealth center ponsor EMT raining class By JASON COX THE BATTALION Scott and White Clinic and the ms A&M Health Science Cen- ais sponsoring a training course students interested in qualify- ijfor state certification as an mergency medical technician MI). The course is taught on Tues- Sy and Thursday evenings, Jan- :iryl8 through May 17 on the IM campus. University Briefs The paramedics who teach the class follow EMT guidelines which focus on several skill lev els: basic CPR, patient assess ment and extrication of automo bile accident victims. EMT Program Director Leroy Varga said the programs' content is weighted by the needs of a community. In smaller towns, skills in geriatrics and minor injury care are stressed rather than skills in trauma emergencies necessary in larger cities, he said. Students must complete 120 hours of classroom instruction maintaining an 80 average, partic ipate in 24 hours of emergency room clinicals and make three su pervised emergency runs before they are eligible to take the certifi cation exam.
