cultural sensitivity.
"A&M should stand up and
say 'We are not going to tolerate
this behavior here/" Thompson
said. "A&M should make people
feel good and realize our goal is to
make our country and our univer
sities great and create opportuni
ties."
Thompson alluded to the Pi
Kappa Alpha fraternity at Texas
Tech University in Lubbock which
was accused of racist behavior at a
party.
The theme was "Party in the
Projects" and allegedly, one frater
nity member attended the party
dressed in a Ku Klux Klan uni
form.
"They threw that fraternity off
Warwick stre(| campus," Thompson said. "What
benefits do we derive from kick
ing students out of school. Do we
deprive them of an education or
do we give them the opportunity
damages excee to become aware of other cul
tures?"
Actually, the Tech fraternity
was not kicked off campus, but it
was punished by its University
Discipline Committee.
The Tech fraternity's rush and
social schedules have been sus
pended through 1994, and it may
not participate in any intramural
sports. Further, it must participate
in several multicultural events
and it must coordinate a program
on human dignity for presentation
to the Tech Greek system.
The fraternity appealed the
sanctions to the University Ap
peals Committee where all the
penalties were upheld.
The fraternity has since filed an
appeal with State Attorney Gener
al Dan Morales, arguing the Uni
versity has violated their civil
rights under the first amendment.
Pending the outcome of the Pi
Kappa Alpha chapter's appeal,
the fraternity continues to main
tain an active rush schedule, social
schedule and athletic schedule —
the sanctions, although being im
posed, are not being enforced.
Regarding the incidents at
Tech, Thompson said she had not
sent a letter to Texas Tech calling
for the resignation of its president
Dr. Robert Lawless for the actions
of its fraternity or for the universi
ty's handling of them, but still in
sisted A&M would be better off if
Mobley stepped down.
Although Thompson disagreed
with Mobley's handling of the
A&M incident, she agreed that the
benefits of a multicultural educa
tion program sponsored by the
A&M Sigma Alpha Epsilon frater
nity far outweigh the option of
kicking students out of school.
"Education should not be used
as a form of punishment," Thomp
son said.
Thompson agrees that educa
tion is the best possible answer to
sensitizing students to cultural di
versity.

-1988, the total number of Presi-
iads to an arit| (jgju'g Achievement Award Schol
arships, $2,000 scholarships mi

In 1991, that number had in

total funds spent on these minori

A&M, along with the Universi

high school, graduate them and
stimulate their interest in attend

A&M has also achieved an 89
percent increase in minority en

highest retention rate for minority
students in Texas; however,

enough - a belief also held by
Mobley.
"When you talk about A&M as
a flagship University, that includes
training the minority leaders of
the future," Mobley said.
Mobley agreed that despite
A&M's steps in a positive direc
tion, much more remains to be
done. "We're making great strides
- it's a challenge and an opportu
nity and we're rising to it - but ob
viously it's not as much as we'd
like."
Mobley said that as society con
tinues to shift toward a global vil
lage setting, it is the responsibility
of the University to educate its
students regarding multicultural
sensitivity, and college is the time
for students to learn how to inter
act and work together.
Beginning in January 1993,
University officials will be meet
ing with African-American and
Hispanic groups to discuss multi
cultural issues, move toward solu
tions and work toward the future.
"We all have our own back
grounds and identities, but it's the
common ground that's going to
make all the difference.
