Local band opens for rap act on Friday

Local dance band Choice of
Diction will open a midnight
show for the internationally pop
ular rap-dance band Snap at the
Sundance Club on Friday.
The members of Choice of Dic
tion are keyboardist and lead vo
calist Rob Williamson, 22, gui
tarist and keyboardist Brad Grif
fith, 23, keyboardist Steve Averitt,
23, and drummer Mike Price, 24.
The band's recently released
demo tape has received some air
play on local radio station KKYS-
FM 92.1.
Griffith said that of the half-
dozen B/CS clubs the group has
played, Sundance is best suited
for a live Choice of Diction perfor
mance.
"It's hard for us here (in B/CS)
because most clubs are not geared
toward dancing and our type of
music," Griffith said. "We like
Sundance a lot."
Williamson said,"We like to
play where people can dance, but
we usually don't get the chance."
Sundance disc jockey Sammy
Henderson said Friday's show
should be exciting.
"Choice of Diction is a quality
band," he said. "I've heard their
(demo) tape and they've got some
great songs to play for us."
Griffith said that although
Choice of Diction is thankful to be
opening for a band as popular as
Snap, the band recognizes B/CS's
limited market potential.
"I definitely want us to break
out and play in Houston, Austin
and Dallas," Griffith said. "We
need to start playing around
Texas."
Williamson, Griffith and
Averitt played together as stu
dents at Kingwood High School
in Houston about 7 years ago,
though the older band was more
guitar-oriented than Choice of
Diction.
"It's really cheap to buy a gui
tar, but our major interests have
always been in music from bands
like Erasure, Depeche Mode and
The Cure," Williamson said.
The band's recent demo tape
shows a trend towards key
board/dance oriented music.
The tape was recorded in'July
after the band won a Stafford
Opera House band contest and
five hours of free recording time
at a local studio. .
Williamson said hearing their
own music on the radio is a
strong incentive for the band.
Choice of Diction will openfoi

"I've never felt so good as
when I hear us on the radio," h(
said. "And I definitely wantto
feel more of it."
