Geography quiz stumps students

Texas A&M Geographical Society
stumped over 500 A&M students with a 10-
question geography quiz — with surprising re
sults.
The average score on the quiz was only 50
percent. During National Geography Aware
ness Week, Nov. 15 - Nov. 21, the A&M chap
ter of the National Geographical Society of
fered students a chance to test their knowledge
of world geography.
Members of the society staffed a table in the
Memorial Student Center offering students a
chance to take the quiz which was created by
two officers of the organization.
Teresa Ohnysty, president of the A&M Geo-
tical Society, said the quiz represented all
of geography and felt that it was impor
tant for people to know more than just land
mass. The questions ranged from questions
about French speaking countries to time zone
conversions. The question that stumped peo
ple the least was, "Your French class is plan
ning a trip to the second largest French-speak
ing city in the world. What city is it?"
Only 19 percent of those quizzed missed
that question. The most difficult questions
were, "What Mediterranean island is adminis
tered on one end by people loyal to Greece and
on the other end by people loyal to Turkey?"
and "You are standing in the desert about 200
miles west of Alice Springs and see a huge
rock 1,069 feet tall and five and one half feet
across. What is the name of the rock?" 54 per
cent of those quizzed missed each of those
questions.
"We didn't want to merely ask student
they knew where places were," Ohnysty
"But because geography encompasses rauc
more — in terms of people politics, andro
nomics of the world — we included thatinoi
quiz."
Ohnysty said she felt by understanding;
disciplines of geography, students can gain
greater awareness and understanding oft
world.
"In understanding where, why, and what;
