Texas A&M University ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT The Battalion
'Woza Albertl'wins several awards
By JENNY MAGEE
Reviewer of THE BATTALION
The Texas A&M production of the play
"Woza Albert!" was named the best produc
tion at a theater festival held at the University
of Texas at El Paso on Nov. 11-15.
The play, which addresses the themes of
racial, social and political struggles in South
Africa, received both the Critic's Choice and
the Director's Choice for the best play at the
competition, a branch of the Kennedy Center
American College Theater Festival.
"Woza Albert!" will now be considered for
performance at a regional festival which will
include plays from Texas, Louisiana, Okla
homa, Arkansas, and New Mexico.
Six plays will be selected from over 800 na
tionwide productions to be performed at the
Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The play, produced by Theatre Inkululeko!,
was originally performed on Nov. 6-8, and
three new performances have been scheduled
for Nov. 20-22 in 201 MSC.
A&M theater arts professor Roger Schultz,
who directed "Woza Albert!," said that he was
excited to see this kind of talent at A&M.
"Rapulana Seiphemo and Clinton Sam, the
actors, are extremely talented young men,"
Schultz said. "Their performance was ab
solutely infectious. The audience was almost
instantaneously on their feet with their ap
plause."
Seiphemo and Sam received nominations
for a scholarship competition for their perfor
mances.
