Leaders call for audits
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
AUSTIN — Texas' top three
leaders called for audits of all
school districts Monday, after an
examination of 55 districts found
that some were spending money
on items including entertainment.
"We have got to show the tax
payers that we are spending our
school dollars wisely, that Jay
Leno tickets don't make the cut,"
Gov. Ann Richards said in the sec
ond week of a special session on
school finance reform.
House Speaker Gib Lewis said
it may take several years to exam
ine every school district, but he
has asked the state auditor to de
velop a plan.
Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock said it's
unfair to draw conclusions from
auditing only a handful of Texas'
1000-pius school districts.
