Page 10 Texas A&MOPINIONThe Battalion Tuesday, November 17,1992 m People must make own moral decisions In a Nov. 11 letter, Shiloh Green questions the use of other standards of morality than the Christian Bible. It is, after all, on a person's own judgment that he or she accepts Biblical authority. I know that there are some people who like to claim that their religion ulti mately guides their judgment. But, if a religion told us something which we otherwise knew to be false, we would choose to question that religious asser tion. You claim to be a Christian, but there exist many different brands of Christian morals from which to choose. If David Nash, to whom you refer, chooses to think that homosexuality is OK in his religion/philosophy (Christ ian or not), that is a result of his own moral decision-making. Likewise, if you choose to shape your version of Christianity such that homosexuality is not okay; that is your choice — which rests on your authority. For religious people, the "lines on moral tolerance" to which your letter's title refers are drawn by women and men who decide what they think is rea sonable and just. Either way, these are man-made de cisions. Does this fact disturb you? Bud Cox Class of '90 Library cuts off news from home for a few Yes, it is unbelievable! The Sterling C. Evans Library has canceled its sub scription to the Bangladesh Observer. It was the only major source of infor mation about Bangladesh for a large number of Bangladeshi students as well as students from other parts of the globe; especially those from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East. It is really hard to believe that a shortage of funds has been cited as one of the reasons behind its discontinua tion. The question is, how much is the li brary going to save by this step? A uni versity which has a large international student body can't remain indifferent to its needs and wishes. I have seen a lot of local newspapers which have only a very few readers. But still they have been able to avoid the cutting axe, which is otherwise very sharp. It is really impossible for a person to gather as much information as a daily newspaper can. It is beyond my capa bility to make expensive international calls from here to get some information. If the library authority does not change its decision, from January 1 I will find for the first time in more than a year (the length of my stay here), that I am separated from my parents and passing my days on foreign soil thousands of miles away from my home. I therefore fervently appeal to the concerned authority to reconsider it, and continue its subscription unhin dered. Shamin Ahmed Graduate student Transfer decision affirmed by good Ags I just wanted to relate a personal sit uation that confirmed that my decision to transfer to Texas A&M was the right one. I work at the remote computing cen ter from 4:00 to 8:00 in the morning, and unfortunately, I busted my knee last week. I would never have been able to hobble to work from Zachary lot (the closest student parking) and wish to thank the two Aggies that gave a complete stranger a ride at 3:30 in the morning. One was a senior engineering major doing late-night research, and the other was a University police officer on pa trol. Guys, thank you again for helping a brother Aggie, and all other Ags for generating a spirit that makes the Uni versity unique. Blake Moore Class of '95 Feminists deterring gentlemanly behavior This is for all you men who have been chewed out for opening the door for a female. Recently, a friend of mine told me he hesitated to open doors or do any of the other gentlemanly things his mother taught him because, he had concluded, we women didn't like it anymore. Well, I'll tell you something that may come as a shock to you: there are still plenty of ladies on this campus that like a gentleman to hold a door open for them if he happens to get to it first, or give up his seat on a crowded bus. Feminism used to be a worthy and admirable cause, but feminists today don't know what they want. Now they want the right to run around topless in public like men do and in the same breath, complain about sexual harass ment! Here's a shocker: men and women are different. They are inherently un equal in their biological, emotional, and physical makeup. That doesn't mean one is better than the other, but both sexes must learn to respect and appreciate the other for the distinct advantages and special quali ties these differences bring. I like being a female, a girl, a lady, a woman, whatever. I like being treated like one. So do most of the rest of the female persuasion on this campus and any where else. You may run across the occasional hard-core feminist who doesn't want to be treated like a lady, but don't let them scare you and please don't let them ruin it for the rest of us!
