Baptist group to create separate
denomination, church official says

OKLAHOMA CITY — A separate organization
formed within the Southern Baptist Convention is a
denomination in the making and should declare its
independence, a Southern Baptist Convention official
said.
Morris Chapman, executive director of the South
ern Baptists, said he didn't expect the Cooperative
Baptist Fellowship members and "mainstream”
Southern Baptists to overcome their differences.
"Their greatest integrity would be openly declar
ing they no longer are cooperating Southern Baptists,
rather than claiming to be Southern Baptists and try
ing to draw funds from good-hearted, grass-roots
Southern Baptists," Chapman said.
"This group has developed its own mission entity
and many other entities that are to a small degree
competitive with our traditional Southern Baptist
mission efforts around the world," Chapman said
Wednesday in an interview with The Daily Okla
homan.
"Every indication points to the fact that they are a
denomination in the making," he said.
Chapman,former pastor of the First Baptist Church
in Wichita Falls, Texas, became executive director of
the Southern Baptist Convention after serving two
terms as convention president. He said some efforts
of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, formed last
year by "moderates," are contrary to the funding
program Southern Baptists have used for years.

Chute problems leave shuttle inoperative

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The commander of
NASA's latest space flight said Thursday the new
shuttle drag chutes still have minor problems that
must be fixed before the system can be declared op
erational.
Commander James Wetherbee and pilot Michael
Baker released the drag chute as planned just before
Columbia's nose wheels touched down on the con
crete runway at Kennedy Space Center on Nov. 1.
Wetherbee said the chute caused the nose of Co
lumbia to swerve to the right. He straightened the
shuttle with the rudder.
"It's not very much of a pull. Ten or 15 feet on a
300-foot-wide runway is not a very big deal. In fact,
it didn't cause me any concern at all," Wetherbee
said.
"It's unknown what would happen if we had
higher crosswinds," he told reporters. "And if we
were landing on a very narrow runway . . . and it
pulled even more then it would be cause for a little
bit more concern."
It was the fourth time a drag chute was tested at
the end of a shuttle flight.

Of the responses that have
come in, the overall sentimdnt has
been against adding a three-hour
multiculturalism requirement to
the curriculum, however those
surveyed supported the infusion
of multiculturalism into the over
all curriculum, Cantrell said.
Kevin Carreathers, director of
the Department of Multicultural
Services, said he supports the ad
dition of a multiculturalisn course
but that the course alone would
not be enough.
"I think it would be to the best
interest to the University, and to
the students, that we educate to
have a required multicultural
course as well as to infuse multi
culturalism throughout the regu
lar academic course requirement
for particular majors," Carreathers
said.
"I don't think it's a course ver
sus infusion, I think it's both," he
said. "Often time people think one
course will solve the matter but
one course is not going to do it."
Sallie Sheppard, associate
provost for undergraduate pro
grams and academic services, said
she agrees with the infusion of
multiculturalism.
"My personal preference is that
we not have one course," Shep
pard said. "I would prefer to see a
inclusion of rmilticultural topics
across the board because I think
that is much better in terms of
providing information in a way
that can bee assimilated by stu-1
dents and can help it fit into their
life."
Sheppard said she believes the
creation of a multicultural course!
would trivialize the issue of multi
culturalism.
"I feel like if we have a separate
course it would be like, 'Ok, you
go do that course and you check
that one off the list,' ; it doesn't
have anything to do with the rest
of your life."
Carreathers said he felt the re
tention of students could improve
because of a comfortable campus
climate with the addition of multi
culturalism in the curriculum.
"As far as assisting the institu
tion in maintaining a positive
campus climate because that bears
into the the retention factor,I
think it would have a big impact
because if people don't feel good
about their climate they're going
to leave," Carreathers said. "If we
can help build and maintain!
positive campus environment
through such a course it might en
tice more people to stay because
they wouldn't be subjected toinci
dent of insensitivity."

all," said Ray Austin, 46, who re
tired last year after 25 years in the
military. "But it's a problem and
it's going to get bigger if they
keep letting them in."

ton said this week he plans to end
the ban. Austin, who retired as a
master sergeant and lives in the
military community of Hampton,
Va., said the topic is hot.
But there is no debate among
his friends. They do not equivo
cate: "We're 100 percent against
it."
