Sports Wednesday, November 11,1992 The Battalion Page 5 Lady Aggies finish home season DARRIN HILL/The Battalion Jennifer Bronner and Andrea Williams prepare to put back a Houston spike in A&M’s match last VVednesday with the Lady Cougars. The Lady Aggies play their last game of the year in G. Rollie White Coliseum against Baylor at 7 p.m. Team plays well, yet fans don't show up. Why? Wwei V V YOU last Saturday afternoon? If you were at Kyle Field watching the Aggies disman tle a good Louisville team, you need read no further, unless you en joy watching our team get rowbeaten. But if you weren't there, ■ why not? How good do the Aggies have to be before you will show up and watch them play? How many games do they have to win? By what margin are they supposed to win? How high do they have to be ranked? I guess that being 9-0 and No. 4 in the nation is not good enough. Only 48,848 fans showed up last week to watch the game, and from the seat I was in it looked as if nearly every one of the 22,000 empty seats were in the student section. I've seen more people at a Univer sity of Texas-Arlington game, which is not a compliment since they dropped their football program be cause of poor attendance. So what is your excuse? In Stanford, 72,571 people saw Stanford University play against the University of Southern California. Neither team is ranked in the top ten. Ohio State against Minnesota? The Columbus school hosted 91,764 to see two teams play that are headed nowhere on New Year's Day. See Davis/ Page 6 Three seniors bid goodbyes to A&M in match with Baylor By DON NORWOOD Sports Writer of THE BATTALION Tonight's 7 p.m. volleyball match be tween Texas A&M and Baylor in G. Rollie White Coliseum will be a bittersweet one for the Lady Aggies. In the midst of A&M's drive to a Southwest Conference tournament berth, the match will be the last one at home for seniors Elizabeth Edmiston, Diane Robertson and Raychelle Michalke - three fixtures for the Lady Aggies. While Michalke has been forced to sit out most of the year with recurring knee problems, the other two veterans have shown no signs of slowing down as the season draws to a close. Robertson has forced her way into more playing time with performances like the one she had last Wednesday against the University of Houston, when she shattered her personal record for kills in a game with 16. And in the Lady Ag gies' three-game loss on the road Friday against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Robert son logged six kills and eight digs while playing in all three games. Leading scorer Edmiston just kept rolling along last weekend, finishing with a season-high 20 digs and a team-best 15 kills in A&M's five-game win over Neva- da-Reno on Saturday. She also had eight kills and 10 digs against Cal Poly-SLO. The reality of losing A&M s veteran leadership has hit one Lady Aggie, junior outside attacker/setter Genny Wood. "This will be the last time I'll play at G. Rollie with Elizabeth and Diane," Wood said Tuesday. "I want this match to be a really good match for them." While Wood seems a bit nostalgic about tonight's match, at least one of the A&M seniors is concerned only with the immediate future. "I'm ready to take these next two matches (Baylor and UT-San Antonio) and get a little more momentum heading into the conference tournament," Edmis ton said without batting an eye. That matter-of-factness might be espe cially valuable tonight since the match will mean more than just the last SWC meeting for both teams. A&M is fourth in the conference with a 3-6 record in league play, just one game ahead of Baylor. If A&M wins, its fourth See Lady Aggies/ Page 6 Hill named SWC Offensive Player of the Week FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS Texas A&M's Greg Hill joined South ern Methodist's Rongea Hill as co-Offen- sive Players of the Week by the Associat ed Press. Greg has proven to be a very accurate barometer for the No. 4 Aggies. When Hill rushes for more than 100 yards, the Aggies usually win, including Saturday's 40-18 victory over Louisville Pullig to start Thursday Texas A&M head coach R.C. Slocum revealed Tuesday that freshman Corey Pullig will start again at quarterback in the Aggies' game against Houston on Thursday, Pullig started for the first time in his college career Saturday against Louisville and completed 14 of 22 for 128 yards. "His performance in games and in practice has been consistent," Slocum said. "He's earped the right to start." when he gained a season-high 142 yards on 26 carries and had a career high three touchdowns. It was Hill's 12th career 100-yard per formance and the Aggies have won 11 of those games. Greg Hill continued to make an impact on the Aggies. He's gained 2,199 yards in 20 games with A&M and has rushed for more yards in those games than any play er in SWC history. "If you leave me in long enough I'll get my rhythm after two or three series," Greg Hill said. "Rodney (Thomas) is the same way. We like to be in the ball game." Freshman Corey Pullig added stability to the Aggies passing game, but that's fine with Hill. "The passing game opens up the of fense for me," he said. "We've been get ting teams pile everybody up on the line. I'm sure Houston is planning to do all of those things. But all I need is a little crack." K.
