Lady Aggies gear up for Houston
Battalion file photo
A&M's Karen Richards goes up for a spike above Houston's Karina Faber in last
year’s match in G. Rollie White Coliseum. Houston won the match in four games.
The Lady Aggies will try for revenge tonight at 7:00 p.m.
Louisville: Hard
to find, might be
hard to defeat
L ouisville.
Does any
one know
where the hell
this place is?
I mean, can
any of you tell
me what state
Louisville is in
because Fm
drawing a
blank.
Actually, I
heard a vicious
rumor that it's
somewhere in
Kentucky and
that it even has
a pretty good
horse track. Something called
Churchill Downs, I think.
And as for that Cardinals moniker,
what kind of name is that for a rough,
tough football team?
As far as I know, the only thing
frightened of cardinals are house cats
after they've eaten all the chicks, and
the little red birds go ballistic.
Pretty scary for the cat, I guess, un
til he figures out what's going on find
makes the momma bird a chaser for
his dinner.
And as far as nicknames go. Ag
gies doesn't exactly strike the fear of
God in anybody either, but Fighting
Farmers is a little better.
But don't be fooled. Aggies.
The Cardinals coach, Howard
Schnellenberger, won a national
championship at the helm of the Mia
mi Hurricanes, and I bet we have all
heard of them.
They have played high quality op
ponents all season and kept the score
close against Ohio State and the Uni
versity of Florida.

Surging Lady Cougars
attempt A&M sweep
By DON NORWOOD
Sports Writer of THE BATTALION
The Texas A&M volleyball team gets
to face the most resurgent team in the
Southwest Conference when they host the
University of Houston at 7 p.m. tonight in
G. Rollie White Coliseum.
The Lady Cougars are tied with the
University of Texas at the top of the con
ference, each holding 7-1 league records.
And Houston is on a roll, having recently
beaten a tough Texas Tech team in five
games.
But even though the Lady Cougars
might be riding high, A&M head coach
A1 Givens hinted that they can be beaten.
And he said that if victory comes about, it
will be more than just another addition to
the win column.
"Houston has some good athletes," he
said. "They compete. If we can get a win
against Houston, that will be a real good
win for our program."
In their first meeting on Oct. 10, Hous
ton needed four games to beat A&M. The
Lady Aggies jumped out to a one-game
lead in that match, but a .159 team hitting
percentage compared to Houston's .265
was too much to overcome.
Although A&M did peter out in its
first clash with Houston, Givens said that
if the Lady Aggies play up to their poten
tial, things might be different this time.
"(This season) we've beaten the teams
we were supposed to beat," Givens said.
"Now it's time to beat the teams we're
even with.
"We need to do it as a team, through a
complete team effort."
The factor of possibly playing the role
of spoiler to Houston's SWC title chances
could figure in tonight's match. But
merely getting a win is motivation
enough for the Lady Aggies.
"We're thinking about playing well
and just beating Houston," middle block
er Kim Mitchell said. "We're just going to
concentrate on doing our best."
Givens echoed Mitchell's sentiments as
he hopes to boost the Lady Aggies'
chances of finishing near the top of the
conference.
"We're just thinking about executing
and playing well," he said. "Those other
things will take care of themselves."
This past weekend was one of stark
contrasts for A&M, whose execution fad
ed in and out in two different matches.
The Lady Aggies played poorly Friday
against Mississippi in Baton Rouge, La.,
but they still came from behind to pull
out a five-game win.

A&M assistant
knows firsthand
about Louisville
By K. LEE DAVIS
Sports Writer of THE BATTALION
No player or coach on the Texas AMI
football team is more familiar with the
Louisville Cardinals than defensive back
coach Trent Walters.
Walters knows Louisville, knows its
coach Howard Schnellenberger arc
knows that the Cardinals are a formidable
foe because he was the defensive back
coach for the Kentucky school from 1986
1990.
Walters' football pedigree is as impm
sive as his bodybuilder's physique. He
was born in Knoxville, Tenn., 48 years
ago and went to Indiana University in
1962, where he played football and grad
uated in four years with a B.S. in physical
education and biology.
Walters had two coaching stints at In
diana and two at Louisville, but his most
impressive coaching stops were at the
University of Washington and with the
Cincinnati Bengals of the National Foot
ball League.
In fact, six of Walters' players have
made it to the NFL.
In the 1990 Fiesta Bowl, Walters' de
fensive backs helped hold Alabama te
just 94 yards passing as the Cardinal:
went on to a 34-7 romp over the Crimsor
Tide.
In the 1992 Cotton Bowl, Walters' Ag
gie defensive backs held the pass-happ)
Florida State Seminoles to 92 yards pass
ing on a wet and sloppy New Year's Da;
in Dallas.
But Walters said he thinks tha:
Louisville could be as big a challenge as
any.
"It (Louisville) is strictly a professional
style passing attack very similar to Stan
ford and Bill Walsh's offense in tha!
they're simple as far as basic formation
o and that they're going to just drof
ack and throw the ball where yot
aren't," Walters said. "They will be a:
