Slocum can go trick-or- treating through the Cotton Bowl this weekend dressed in a red coaching jacket, gray pants and a red hat. That's right, Slocum. Here's your chance. This is the day to do your best John Jenkins impersonation. As much as we all may hate him, as much as we despise the being of the most unsportsmanlike coach on the face of the earth, Jenkins is good at do ing one thing: Embarrassing an oppo nent. So what if it wins him no friends? So what if everyone in the world criti cizes Jenkins for rubbing the noses of poor teams like the Ponies in their own mess? Just look at last season, and we will all see why, for one day, Slocum needs to think like he's coaching Cougar High. Last season, Jenkins had an early season matchup with eventual nation al champion Miami after completely demoralizing Louisiana Tech in the season opener. Jenkins was traveling to the Sunshine State with a less-than- average offensive line and a defense that was even worse, which everyone would see during the middle of the See Foster/Page 8 J. STOLLEIS/The Battalion Freshman Dana Santleben tries to dig a serve from the University of Texas during the Lady Aggies three game loss to the Lady Longhorns Wednesday night. By J. DOUGLAS FOSTER Sports Editor of THE BATTALION AUSTIN —When the Texas A&M Lady Aggies hosted the University of Texas on Oct. 7, Texas swept through G. Rollie White Coliseum in three straight games, finishing A&M off in a match that lasted less than an hour. Wednesday night in Austin, the Lady Longhorns picked up where they left off three weeks ago, taking the Lady Aggies down in three games by scores of 15-10, 15-3 and 15-11. Texas, now 18-3, 7-1 in Southwest Conference play, disposed of A&M in front of a Recreational Sports Center record crowd of 2127 despite playing without starters Angie Breitenfield and Errica Hibben, both of whom were out with an injury. The Lady Aggies fall to 12-9, 3-5 in conference play. The Lady Aggies finished the match with a minus .009 hitting percentage, and the Lady Longhorns hit .236. In the first game, neither team was able to put the ball down offensively as Texas' .132 hitting percentage outdid A&M's .063. The Lady Aggies had only 10 kills on 32 attempts compared to the Lady Longhorns' 14 kills on 38 attempts. In game two, Texas looked as if they had never lost Breitenfield and Hibben, cruising past A&M by a score of 15-3. Af ter opening the match with a 6-0 run, the Lady Longhorns saw the Lady Aggies fight back to a 6-3 score before going on a 9-0 run to seal the win and put A&M down two games to none. The Lady Aggies finished game two with a minus .158 hitting percentage. Junior Katy Jameyson and sophomore Sarny Duarte led the Lady Longhorns through game two, combining for 11 kills between them. Jameyson, who finished the match with a .400 hitting percentage thanks to 10 kills on 20 attempts and only two er rors, said the Lady Aggies played her squad a tougher match this time, but that her team played well enough offensively to pull out the win. "They attacked a lot stronger this time and played quite a better in the middle than they did last time," Jameyson said. "Their outside people pounded the ball, but our outsiders pounded it, too. "We just had a pretty good night of fensively." In the final game, the Lady Aggies fought back from a 9-5 deficit to tie the game at nine before Texas head coach Mick Haley decided to call a time-out to regroup his troops. Texas went on a 3-0 run after the break to take a 12-9 lead, then finished off A&M 15-11. A&M head coach A1 Givens said he felt Texas wasn't as strong without the two injured starters, but said they still had enough talent to keep the Lady Ag gies from taking this match to four games. "They were definitely more vulnerable without Breitenfield and Hibben, but we would be too if we lost two of our starters," Givens said. "I thought we would be able to extend the match and make it go more than three games with them out, which was something we need ed to do to win this match." Haley also said the Lady Aggies played better this time, but that inconsis tency on offense kept them from being able to extend the match. "I thought they served and passed re ally well," Haley said. "They had quite a bit of trouble generating offense, though, and I thought that was their downfall." Givens said his A&M squad had not been playing up to the potential he felt it had, and said the Lady Aggies didn't show Texas how much talent there really was on the team. "I know we can compete at a higher level than we have been," Givens said. "I don't want 'to take anything away from Texas, because they are a great team. But I know we are capable of playing better than this." The Lady Aggies will now travel to Ba ton Rouge this weekend for two games, taking on Louisiana State and Ole Miss before returning home next Wednesday to host the University of Houston in con ference play. p — — — — — — — l Square Deal > $1.99 I • 2 pieces of Chicken I • 1 Buttermilk Biscuit • Mash potatoes with gravy • EXTRA CHARGES FOR HONEY B8QHA- I VORED A SKINFREE CRISPY CHICKEN (wher* available) Good only at partici- KFC locations while supply lasts. .
