The list is as close as one is likely to come to compiling baseball's K. LEE DAVIS Sports Writer Braves rip Pirates. . . .Page 6 canon of superstars. Jackson, Ruth, Speaker, Henderson, Cobb, Stargell, Hershiser and Clemente are all men who turned the playoffs into a per sonal showcase and have gone on to achieve moments frozen in the mind's eye as the best that we as a nation and our beloved pastime have to offer. But for every player who has crys tallized a place in baseball history with inspired play in October, there is another that has never lived up to the promise he showed from April through September. Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Barry Bonds is just such a player. Bonds put up MVP type numbers all season long, including a torrid .402 batting average in September, leading up to last night's opening game of the National League Championship Se ries, where he again went into the tank. I say that he again went into the tank, because Bonds is now 7-for-48 lifetime in the playoffs after last night's 0-for-3 outing. Those numbers translate to a cool See Davis/ Page 6 A&M out to repeat last year's UT upset Archrivals meet in important SWC battle By K. LEE DAVIS Sporls Writer of THE BATTALION The last time the University of Texas Lady Longhorns traveled to College Sta tion to take on Texas A&M, they were handed a five- game defeat that ended sev en years of to tal conference dominance. The Lady Aggies will get another chance to hang a loss on ninth- ranked Texas as the two teams meet tonight in G. Rollie White Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. A&M head coach A1 Givens believes his Lady Aggies can compete against Texas, but they have to play a solid all- around match. "We don't have any superstars, so Time: 7:00 p.m. Place: G. Rollie White Coliseum Records: A&M (10-5, 1-1 in SWC),Texas (11-2, 2-0 in SWC) Tickets: $5 for armchair seats, $3 for general admission we're going to have to play well as a unit, and everybody on the court is go ing to have to play well," Givens said. Junior setter Genny Wood said A&M must find a balance between aggressive and intelligent play to win tonight. "We have got to be smart with our shots," Wood said. "We can't just go out and hammer every ball. "Then again, we can't be tentative against them. They're a team that's go ing to stress us with their blocking and their defense, so we just have to do what it takes to kill the ball." Givens said he expects Texas to play a powerful, fast game against A&M. "Offensively, Texas is incredible," Givens said. "They have a lot of differ ent players that are hitting for a high percentage. "We have a lot of respect for them as a team, and what they have been able to accomplish, but we also feel that we can play with them." The Lady Longhorns will be the fourth top 20 team A&M has faced this season, and the second in the top 10. Givens said that experience should help them, but the fact remains that Texas See Lady Aggies/ Page 6 Battalion file photo Lady Aggie Elizabeth Edmiston was a big part of last year's five-game win over Texas, breaking the Lady Longhorns’ 69-game conference winning streak. Edmiston motivates Lady Aggies through her senior season By DON NORWOOD Sports Writer of THE BATTALION Although the number of home games remaining for Texas A&M senior volley ball player Elizabeth Edmiston are dwin dling down to a precious few, you might not be able to tell it when speaking to the Lady Aggies' top scorer and on-court motivator. Edmiston is taking a no-nonsense ap proach to the final season of her glory- filled career at A&M, one that has placed her among school career leaders in four different statistical categories. She realizes that, including tonight's contest with Texas, she has only five matches left in G. Rollie White Coliseum. She is also fully aware that A&M's tal ented squad is heavy on underclassmen, meaning that this year's good team could be great in the not-too-distant fu ture. But for Edmiston, nostalgia is some thing she would rather do without. She still has work to be done. "When it gets to be your senior year, you kind of realize in the back of your mind that it's the last time," she said. "You still have to approach games with the same mindset of the last four years. "I looked forward to this season, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season." By taking a look at her numbers, one might be able to see why Edmiston was so eager to take the court in the Lady Aggies' season opener back on Sept. 1. Her 177 kills in 15 matches have elevated her to fifth on A&M's all-time list with 1,048. Also, she has become only the third player in school history to break the 3,000 mark in kill attempts with a to tal of 3,075.
