Extreme shows versatility
on new, fast-paced album
By TRICIA MARTINEZ
Reviewer of THE BA TTA LION
Extreme
"III Sides To Every Story"
A&M Records
Extreme's third release, "HI Sides To Every Sto
ry," is out and steadily rocking its way up the mu
sic charts.
It's a relief to know that Extreme will not sell it
self short by living in candyland, producing sin
gles such as "More Than Words" and "Hole
Hearted," which were so successful on their second
release, "Pornagrafiti." Don't get me wrong, the
songs are good, but they are more along the lines of
The Outfield.
Extreme is a rock group and "HI Sides To Every
Story" illustrates this to the highest degree. There
are a couple of tracks that sound as though Chica
go might have had some input, but other than
those two the album contains solid rock.
Nuno Bettencourt is memorable on guitar, and
drummers will especially enjoy listening to "Cupid's
Dead," which is full of Paul Geary's drum solos.
Extreme tried some innovative ideas on this al
bum. It opens with a military voice giving com
mands to what sounds like an entire infantry
troop, but when you hear a young girl's small
voice reply "Yes, daddy" it sets the mood for the
entire album.
You just don't know what will happen next.
In fact, you hear everything from train sound ef
fects in " Stop the World" to Martin Luther King
Jr. delivering a speech in "Peacemaker Die."
The hard rock stops just long enough for Ex-
Extreme rocks and gets more innovative with
their third album, "III Sides To Every Story."
treme to fit in a ballad. Once again their unforget
table harmony is heard as on ^Pornagrafiti" and
you learn that all members of the group are talent
ed on vocals.
Lead singer Gary Cherone goes all out on this
project. He sounds as though he is having a good
time, especially on the cut ^'Tragic Comic." It al
most seems that he is laughing in parts, or at least
smiling.
The album's latest single, "Rest In Peace,"isal-
ready receiving local air play on AOR stations and
is holding position five on the charts. Extreme tru
ly fits the old cliche that the third time is a charm.
'Bob Roberts' overdoes political parody
By TIMM DOOLEN
Special to THE BATTALION
"Bob Roberts"
Starring Tim Robbins
Directed by Tim Robbins
Now playing at Schulman 6
It's hard to believe, but it is pos
sible to try too hard to make neo-
fascist con
servatives
look like id
iots. In "Bob
Roberts,"
first-time
writer-direc
tor Tim Rob
bins makes
the title char
acter of the movie into an unbeliev
able parody of Republiqan^politics.
The film is a mock British docu
mentary on American politics, fo
cusing on a fictional 1990 Pennsyl
vania Senate campaign.
Robbins creates a serious look
at a laughable character, or a hu
morous look at a contemporary
politician. It depends on your
point of view, and how closely
you identify with the teachings of
the Grand Old Party.
Bob Roberts rises to fame as a
conservative folk singer, makes
millions in Wall Street in the 1980s
and decides to run for the Senate,
taking us on the road to our coun
try's ruin.
"Conservative folk" may be a
contradiction in terms, but it's the
basis of the funniest parts of the
movie.
Roberts lampoons Bob Dylan's
"Times They Are A-Changin'" in
the humorous "Times Are Chang
ing Back," which, along with simi
lar songs, extolls the virtues of
blind conservatism.
In "I'm a Bleeding Heart" he
,sings "Let's give money away to
lazy people..,What's right is
right/ What's left is wrong." You
get the idea.
Aboard his tour bus is a stock
market on wheels, where he con
tinues to make more millions, and
at night he makes singing appear
ances around the state to ooost his
place in the polls.
The premise is enough to keep
you laughing for the first 30 tofi
minutes, and some of the running
jokes provide additional laughs.
But the serious edge thatcreens
in through the first half of tne
movie and flourishes in the sec
ond half engulfs the movie and
drowns it.
This film is too one-sided to be
taken seriously, and too seriousto
be taken laughingly throughout.
The conservatives are sooooobad,
and the liberals are soooogood-
it's safe to say there's a nappy
middle ground.
Nonetheless, the songs area
hoot (buy the soundtrack). The
whole film should havebeenas
good.
"Bob Roberts" will appeal to
people who are,fed u.p..with glossy
politicians. One warning: this
movie is not for all tastes and may
offend those who lean to the right
A rule of thumb - if you got ex
cited about the Dan Quayle rally
on campus this week, don't see
"Bob Rooerts."
