British try to stabilize weakened pound
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

-here, including the United States. Cappingo
LONDON — Britain frantically tried to stabilize
the weakening pound Wednesday by hiking interest
rates, buying large amounts of the currency and sus
pending its foreign-exchange links to other European
countries. Britain's actions intensified a sense that co
operation among the powerful nations of Western
Europe is splintering even as they are seeking to
forge closer unity. That added to the monetary tur-
of the most convulsive and frenetic trading daji
ever, the Treasury announced late Wednesday!!
would suspend the pound from the Europeanei-
change rate mechanism, which sets maximum flucti
ation rates for major European currencies.
This means Britain no longer is obligated to ust
interest rate adjustments to-keep the pound within
limits specified by agreement.
