Cancer society sponsors duck race

Rubber ducks will swim toward victory in the
fight against cancer during the American Cancer So
ciety's "Great Texas Duck Race" at the Texas A&M
Research Park pond Sept. 26.
Tickets for the event can be purchased at local
bookstores.
Phyllis Davis, field representative for district 19
with the American Cancer Society, said that for
every ticket bought, that person will be given a duck
for the race.
At 10 a.m. the rubber ducks will be dropped into a
river that runs into the park's pond. The first duck
to reach the shore will be the winner, and the pur
chaser of the winning duck will win two round-trip
tickets anywhere that Continental Airlines flies.
Other prizes include a date package and a Sports
package. Davis said the packages are valued at $150
a piece.
Rick Michael, a member of the TAMU chapter of
the American Cancer Society, will be volunteering at
the event.
Michael said he became involved with the Ameri
can Cancer Society because he wanted to learn more
about the disease.
"I wanted to learn about all the aspects of it, not
just the research," Michael said.
Davis said that the American Cancer Society of
fers people diagnosed with the disease wheel chairs,
walkers and hospital beds,. „ .
"It does not matter if you're young or old, what
color you are, how much mongy you have or where
you live, these materials are available to everyone at
no cost."
A support group, called "I Can Cope," is available
for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, fea
turing guest speakers such as physicians, nurses, so
cial workers, and dieticians.
Davis said Texas A&M University has received
over $300,000 in grants for cancer research.
"The grant is given to the top researchers in the
field, and we are pleased that A&M received the
money," Davis said.

"100 Trees in 100 Days," a
beautification project for the jog
ging trail and amphitheater area
of Wolf Pen Creek Park in College
Station, got under way Monday.
Commerce National Bank pre
sented the city with a $500 dona
tion to kick off the project.
The beautification project,
which is sponsored by the College
Station Parks and Recreation De
partment and Brazos Beautiful,
Inc., plans to provide 100 new
trees for the Wolf Pen Creek Park
Phase I development. The trees
and planting costs for the project
total $10,000.
Brazos Beautiful, Inc., a non
profit volunteer organization that
is part of Keep America Beautiful,
is soliciting donations to be used
for tree plantings in the park.

ful is to further, through educa
tion and awareness, a cleaner and
more beautiful community, said

new project," she said. "We found
that this is the perfect time to
work with the parks and recre
ation department, because the jog
ging trail and amphitheater really
need work."
The tree selection and place
ment for the initial planting is in
tended to meet shading, aesthetic,
sound absorption and species di
versification needs in the park.
Trees will be planted on Jan. 16,
1993, and volunteer help is need
ed for the planting.
Fund raising for the project
will end on Dec. 24,. and Craig is
optimistic about the funds collect
ed thus far.
"We just kicked off the project
on Monday, and we already have
$2,000. We should have no trou
ble raising the rest of the money
by Christmas Eve," she said.
All donations to the project are
tax-deductible, and Craig believes
that a donation is a wonderful
way for campus organizations to
get involved.
"If a person or organization
donates $100 or more, their name
will be put on a plaque and will
be remembered forever," she
said.
Craig said that although only
those donating more than $100
will receive a plaque, donations of
any size are gladly welcomed.
Donations go towards the pur
chase of 30-gallon trees and plant
