Ann Richards is join ing an effort to lure replicas of Christopher Colum bus' ships to a new home on the Texas coast. The governor said she'll ask Spanish officials to consider Corpus Christi as the homeport for the replicas of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, known collectively as Los Barcos. The governor's efforts will include sending a rep resentative to Spain and urging Texas schoolchildren to write King Juan Carlos. Texas mayors also will be asked to support the campaign. Richards decided to join the campaign Monday af ter meeting with a group from Corpus Christi that hopes to secure the ships. "We told her We needed someone who could get the attention of Spain, and she indicated she would be glad to do it," said Gary Bushell, president of the Corpus Christi Area Economic Development Corp. "We were pleased by how receptive she was. She was very enthusiastic. She immediately understo® the importance of the ships," he said. Said Richards' spokeswoman Margaret Justi "She strongly believes they (Los Barcos) belong Texas and Corpus Christi." Corpus Christi is among five cities vyingforft ships. Spanish officials will visit all five by theend October to discuss proposals to homeport therepi cas. Corpus Christi's stiffest competition will belroi groups in New York City, Columbus, Ga., Mian and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., according to Wi Crook, who is leading the Los Barcos campaign. The ships visited Corpus Christi for 10 days March. Report warns of collapse of health care delivery system THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AUSTIN — Texas' health care delivery system "could collapse before the turn of the century," says a preliminary task force re port outlining broad proposed changes in medical care and in surance coverage. "The crisis in Texas mirrors a national crisis. Health care is de livered in a manner that is grossly unfair to its citizens and is inca pable of responding to the basic needs of all people, says the re port by the Texas Health Policy Task Force. "The crisis can no longer be ignored." The task force will vote on a fi nal report at the end of the month to send Gov. Ann Richards and lawmakers. A draft document re cently was revised, and p comment will be accepted Sept. 17. The draft says Texas must® centrate on preventing illness and meeting basic health care needs, rather than what it calls a currek emphasis on "expensive treat ments, high-technology proce dures, and specialty care/' Topping the draft's prop recommendations is developing) statewide health care systemtoi all children and pregnant women The plan would allow people choose their doctors, and uniform rates would be established for ser vices. A substantial part of the plan's cost could come from federal Medicaid matching funds, force members have said. IFC Seminar Wed. Sept. 2, MSC 229 6:00 p.m. Reception Thurs.
