The 16-year-old suspect was ar rested without incident at his Pleasant Grove home. Police said Jamie Easter was slashed to death, then discovered on a hallway floor by her 11-year- old brother as he arrived home from school. Homicide detectives declined to release a motive for the murder, but said the suspect lived on the same street. Jamie Easter's family members said the suspect was her boyfriend. A close friend Tuesday said the girl told the suspect several weeks ago that she was pregnant with his child. But police said she made up the story to force the boy to stop dating another girl. The day she died, Jamie Easter missed school with a stomach ache and spent the day at a neigh bor's house. She went home to change clothes around 4 p.m. and that's when the attack occurred, police said. He had planned the murder for several weeks, Sgt. Jim Chandler said. Dallas County prosecutors will have to decide whether to seek certification to try the suspect, who is three weeks from his 17th birthday, as an adult. Governor shoots down Republican convention THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HONEY GROVE, Texas - Gov. Ann Richards spent her birthday Tuesday firing verbal barbs at President Bush and birdshot at doves during a hunt used to stump for state Sen. Ted Lyon and Railroad Commissioner Lena Guerrero. The doves were safe. Richards went home to Austin empty-handed. However, Bush took several on the wing. Richards, with incumbent troupe in tow, blamed Bush and former President Ronald Reagan for ''destroying'' Texas' oil and gas in dustry. She also predicted that the tone at this year's GOP convention would turn away vot ers in November. "The Republicans had such a really sad convention, such an angry convention, they didn't get the bounce from it, called a dead cat bounce," she told about 200 people, mostly hunters. "You know even a dead cat will bounce if you throw it hard enough." She also took general jabs at domestic is sues such as unemployment and the economy. "These guys stand up there saying 'Who do ou trust?' I mean, our answer is 'You got to e kidding,' " Richards said. The dove hunt, a fund-raiser for Lyon in his home district, was part of a two-day trip through East Texas to help boost the profiles of both Lyon and Guerrero. Lyon, the victim of recent redistricting, faces a tough race this fall against Florence Shapiro, former mayor of Plano. In the recent redistricting move, Lyon lost voters in rural areas — where he has the most support — and gained a number of urban vot ers. Guerrero, was appointed by Richards to fill state Comptroller John Sharps vacant seat on the Texas Railroad Commission when he was elected in 1990. The former state representa tive for Austin faces her first election this fall against Republican Barry Williamson, a Dallas oilman. The three made a four-town campaign trip Monday, visiting Plano, Rockwall, Terrell and Canton. Richards' hunting party on Tuesday included Lyon and his son Payton, Guerrero and her husband Leo Aguirre, State Comptrol ler John Sharp and Barry Bridges, both securi ty officer and hunting advisor to Richards. About 200 people paid at least $125 dollars each to attend the dove hunt, barbecue and a visit with Richards. The annual Richards dove hunt has become a powerful political tool, as first discovered in 1990. The former Texas treasurer was getting stomped by West Texas oilman Clayton Williams in voter polls about the time dove season opened that year. A lot of mileage was given then, she said, to accusations that be cause she was a woman, she would be soft on crime and would take a hard stance against gun owner's rights. Lyon invited her to go hunting and take the press along. "Man, after that my numbers went straight up in East Texas," Richards said. "So I thought I'd come back hunting last year and I did and this year, because I want to keep my numbers up in East Texas." Bees attack man Lawn mower noise agitates swarm THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CORPUS CHRISTI - A 78- ear-old San Patricio County man as escaped serious injuries in an attack by a bee swarm that stung him more than 100 times as he mowed his lawn. John Snyder was attacked early Monday at his rural residence about 10 miles west of Sinton in South Texas, sheriff's officials said. He was airlifted to Humana Hospital in Corpus Christi, which released him Monday afternoon, said hospital spokeswoman Mary Daniel. Adam Ogan, a county animal control officer, said it was not im mediately known if the bees that attacked Snyder were African ized, or so-called killer bees. A sample of bees from Mon day's attack was sent to the hon eybee lab at Texas A&M Universi ty for identification, said Ogan, who added that there have been four confirmed killer bee attacks in San Patricio County this year. Ogan said the bees apparently were stirred by the sound of Sny der's mower. "We tell people to be careful when they go out to mow the lawn. They should look every where for a bee hive before they start mowing,” he said. "And if they get attacked, they should run in a straight direction until all of the bees are off." Crime Watch By CPL.
