Death becomes
hilarious joke
By Anas Ben-Musa
The Battalion
"Death Becomes Her"
Starring Meryl Streep, Goldie
Hawn, Bruce Willis, and Isabella
Rossellini
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Rated PG-13
Playing at Post Oak III
Death is not a funny matter to
experience or even think about,
but "Death Becomes Her" makes
the afterlife the subject of a hilari
ous farce.
Meryl Streep plays an actress,
Madeline Ashton, whose career is
declining. Streep does a wonder
ful job playing an obnoxious,
power-hungry actress.
Goldie Hawn plays Ashton's
best friend since childhood, Helen
Sharp. However, the way they go
at each other throughout "Death,"
you would wonder what would
happen if they were enemies.
Hawn is absolutely breathtak
ing as the red-head vixen, but in
one sc jne you see a different side
of Hawn's character.
Sharp introduces Ernest
Menville, her fiance, played by
Bruce Willis, to Ashton. Ashton
takes a liking to Menville. Of
course, Ashton steals him away
(not for the first time) and this to
tally devastates Sharp.
Sharp's life becomespathetic
and unfulfilling. She gains 300
pounds and is committed.
After six months of recupera
tion, Sharp is convinced the only
way to solve her problems is to
kill Ashton.
With the help of a magical im
mortality potion, given to her by a
mysterious lady named Lisle (Is
abella Rossellini), Sharp becomes
a best-selling author of beauty
books. Rossellini's character is an
outrageous sexual goddess, like
the costumes (or lack of) she
wears.
Coincidentally, Ashton takes
the same potion herself. She has
desperately tried to preserve her
youth with the help of her hus
band, Ernest, and everything else
she could get her hands on.
The audience after this point
sees exceptional special effects. A
wonderful example is the fight
scene with Ashton and Sharp.
Sharp uses a shovel and clob
bers Ashton's head down almost
all the way to her stomach. They
begin to argue after that and
Sharp screams at Ashton, "I won't
talk to you anymore until you put
your head back on straight."
Ashton and Sharp try to kill
each other, but they realize the po
tion prevents their demises. Twist
ed necks and huge stomach holes
create some very funny situations.
It is thoroughly disgusting to
watch the hacking and abuse of
bodies, but it makes "Death" a
wonderful dark comedy.
If your curious about what im
mortality is like, go see "Death Be
comes Her," but I suggest you do
not eat anything before you go.

Rush' takes tough look at drug uvrhi Hn
By Kim McGuire
The Battalion
"Rush"
Starring Jason Fatric, Jennifer Ja
son Leigh
Directed by Lili Fini Zamick
The line that separates the
good guys from the bad guys is
treaded precariously by stars Ja
son Patric and jeniffer Jason
Leigh in the new thought pro
voking movie "Rush" which was
released on videocassette last
week.
"Rush" is based on the book
of the same name written by for
mer narcotic agent Kim Wozcn-
craft who was sent in to infiltrate
a drug ring in Tyler, Texas in the
late 70's.
i Jennifer Jason Leigh plays of
ficer Kristen Cates (modeled after
Wozencraft) who is teamed with
veteran narcotic officer Jim
Raynor (Jason Patric) to bring
down the leader of the Texas
drug syndicate. To do this, both
Raynor and Cates must go deep
undercover by posing as drug
users. First though, Raynor must
"educate" Cates in drug lingo,
drug paraphernalia and proper
shooting up techniques.
As the pair begins their mis
sion, they become lovers and
eventually addicts. The bound
ary that separates their police
Jobs and undercover roles be
comes hazy for the two. Turning
in the drug evidence to the agent
in charge of the operation (Sam
Elliott) becomes increasingly dif
ficult for Raynor and Cates.
It's this self-struggle that
makes "Rush" such an interest
ing and thought provoking
movie. The thought of corrupt
police officers might come as no
surprise but to see them grapple
with the dilemma of justice vs.
addiction is truly fascinating.
Jason Patric is, without a
doubt, the back bone of this
movie. He gives a great perfor
mance as the veteran narc,
Raynor. Patric's level of intensity
throughout the movie is over
whelming. His drug withdrawal
scenes are realistic and sympathy
arousing. It is dear Patric is des
tined for greatness.
Leigh , also, is very good as
the inexperienced cop, Cates.
Her role is interesting in that her
character undergoes the biggest
metamorphosis. She goes from
the sweet naive cop to the strung
out junkie who will do anything
for drugs . Leigh also has a
promising future a dramatic ac
tress and will soon be featured in
the much anticipated "Single
White Female."
One cameo not worth missing
is that of Greg Allmarm, of the
now defunct Allmann Brothers
Band as the drug king pin. De
spite the smallness of the role.
Allmann is great. He is truly:
menacing villain. It would bi
great to see his in future "bit
guy" roles.
The only fault to "Rush"!:
that it does, however, drag is&!
beginning. Also, the ending
doesn't follow Wozencraft's bool
nor does it really tell what hap
pens to the Wozencraft/Cate;
character. But the chemistry be
tween Patric and Leigh is alon-
worth watching "Rush." Plusfc
end is truly "explosive."
"Rush" is one of those critical
ly acclaimed "thinking rhanV!
movies that your might havetc:
watch twice to appreciate.
You'll be glad you did.

Review
"Singles” motion picture soundtrack.
Avid worshipers of MTV (like me) should
by now be totally blown over by Alice In
Chains' new video for their single "Would?"
taken from the "Singles" soundtrack. Alter
nating with carefully-sequenced black and
white footage from the movie, Alice In
Chains drum out a ferocious tune backed by
intoxicating bass and tantalizing guitars.
While "Would?" could have possibly set a
standard too high to match, the rest of the al
bum do not pale by comparison. With the
movie portraying the seedy club circuits of
Seattle, the soundtrack is naturally expected
to showcase the best of the city's real-life un
derground bands.
Current alternative-darlings Pearl Jam set
wild emotions flaring with two scorching
new songs, "Breath" and "State Of Love And
Trust," both of which should further intensify
the band's foothold on the competitive music
scene. Up-and-coming Soundgarden, howev
er, prefers to thrash through the high shrills
of "Birth Ritual."
to provide a strong back-up. With a varieho
musical styles ready to captivate, theyoffei
refreshing foretaste of new sounds to come
Also worthy of your attention is Pai
Westerberg (of The Replacements,) whopr;
vides a welcome reprieve from gloom wit;
his harmless pop tunes "Dyslexic Heart"an:
"Waiting For Somebody."
The finishing touches come fromChri
Cornell with his acoustic "Seasons" and Jin;
Hendrix with "May This Be Love,"
tracks give the album balance.
With a soundtrack this good, it ist
ing to conclude the movie is worth
the music alone. The "Singles" soundtrack:]
one timeless collection that fans of
bands would rather die than miss.
