Local antique dealers offer
home furnishing alternatives
By Kim McGuire
The Battalion
The beginning of school spells
out an almost certain doom for
many college students . . . moving.
For those students who have
never had their own apartment or
house, the experience of buying
new furniture and decorations can
be almost fun. There's only one
problem . . . money.
Anyone who's ever been to the
mall or other department stores
know how incredibly expensive it
is to furnish a house. There is,
however, an alternative solution ..
. antiques.
The Bryan-College Station area
is home to several antique stores
that carry affordable furniture ais
well as other odds and ends, trin
kets and baubles.
"We've got everything from
the sublime to the ridiculous,"
Jane Sandlin, owner of The Recy
cle Shop said. "People often think
of antiques as high priced muse
um collectibles, but we have rela
tively inexpensive items that
could be used for apartments and
dorms."
Mary Bryant, an owner of Bry-
Mac Collectibles, said quite a few
of their customers are students.
"We have items that are of in
terest to students like bookcases,
desks, tables and chairs," Bryant
said. "If the antique seems out of
their price range they should keep
in mind we have a flexible lay
away."
Bryant said people should con
sider buying antiques as opposed
to newer model furniture for the
quality alone.
"A lot of what we have is all
hand-done which greatly im
proves the quality," Bryant said.
"When you buy furniture today
and they claim its 'real wood' its
often just made of wood chips
glued together."
Bud Sparks, owner of the Attic

Antiques, said that the wood that
craftsmen used at the turn of the
century is much more durable
than that of today.
"They use wood now long be
fore its ready," Sparks said. "Back
then, they took their time and took
a real pride in what they were do
ing."
"An antique is a great invest
ment," Sandlin said. "Back then,
they took their time and took a

ing.
"An antique is a great invest
ment," she said. "You can always
expect the value to increase."
In fact, Bryant said as a general
rule of thumb, values increase on
an average of ten percent per year.
Audie Brown, owner of Migra
tion Antiques, said the hottest
thing on the market is turn of the
century antiques.
"Turn of the century antiques
are becoming very scarce," Brown
said. "If you have an item from
that time period you can be sure
the value will increase."
Most of the antique store own
ers said they obtain their items
through trading with local people.
However, sometimes they have to
travel to find them.
Brown said he used to make
annual trips to Pennsylvania and
New York for antiques.
Bryant said her parents also
travel up East to buy antiques.
"They go to Pennsylvania,
Ohio and West Virginia to find
things," Bryant said. "The reason
is antiques are easier to find in ru
ral areas. Farmers almost always
DARRIN HILL/The Battata
Bud and Betty Sparks, owners of "The Attic" antique store, sit in front of their display room of antiques
have neat things for us."
Brown said you don't need to
travel that far to find good an
tiques.
"I've been to almost every an
tique store in Texas and, for a
town this size, we've got a great
representation right here," he
said.
"I think the antique selection
in the Brazos Valley is great,"
Bryant said. "Of course you cant
find the high-dollar stuff like you
would in Dallas or Houston but
that's because we don't have the
clientele like they do. But really,
you can find anything that's prac
tical here."
Bryant suggested people inter
ested in collecting antiques might
consider attending an antique
show.
"We'll be having a show Octo
ber 9-11 at the Brazos Center,"
Bryant said. "There should be
about 40 dealers from all over
buying, selling and trading."
Sandlin suggested first
antique collectors should keep an
open eye for classics rather
trends and always rememberag{

Bud Sparks agreed that shop
pers should keep quality first
"It's like the saying

taste of cheapness is gone.'"

"Kiss The Sky"
Motown
Paul Hardcastle of “Kiss the SKY.”
1 had great expectations for Kiss The
Sky, and not just because of their some
what over-lyrical name lifted from the
jimi Hendrix classic "Purple Haze." It
was mainly due to the fact that this group
was formed by top-notch producer/mu
sician Paul Hardcastle and female vocal
ist Jaki Graham, both highly-regarded
artistes in the U.K.
Hardcastle is best remembered for his
1985 hit record "19," a throbbing instru
mental that echoes insistently the average
age of Americans fighting the Vietnam
War.
Graham, on the other hand, has had a
string of hits including "Could It Be Tm
Falling In Love" and "Set Me Free."
Bringing the two artistes together should
expand their creative talents to brave new
horizons, but sadly the tunes contained
on their debut sound tried and uninspir
ing.
First track "Voodoo Child" is a funky
update of the Jimi Hendrix original. A
different beat is spliced in together with
the pile up of electronics in an attempt to
create a contemporary soulful atmo-
iving For You" also has a nice daref
groove, with a sample of the chorus from
Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You
thrown in. Both tracks were given the re
quired punch from Graham's powerful
vocals, but did not impress me as'out
standing hit materials.
Maybe the faet i Hardca*stle playsall
the instruments heredvas something to do
with it, but 1 have the feeling that tliis al
bum seems to strive on the same rhythms
throughout.
Programmed drum sequences and so
phisticated bass lines form the base for
Kiss The Sky's Americanized R&B tunes
which wander off into monotony after
while. Eventually it was the poignant
"Your Heart Got In The Way" that won
me over with its sincerity'.
Kiss The Sky's delbut offers a re
spectable selection of contemporary
dance tunes highly influenced by 70s
funk and jazz. 1

that is having trouble with his love life. Unfortunately, his mother
played by Estelle Getty, shows up and causes more problems with bis
girlfriend and lieutenant boss, played by Jobeth Williams. The majorii)
of the film deals with the conflicting feelings Joe has with his mother
Tutti, and his girlfriend, Gwen.
Throughout "Stop!" Getty's character made me chuckle with he'
outlandish behavior.
One scene, Tutti decides to clean her son's house at 3 a.m. She stub
hies on one of his guns he left lying around in his laundry basket, ft
course, the gun is somewhat oily and dirty, so Tutti decides to death
with some bleach, scouring powder, and a brush. This is hot thebd
thing to do with a gun, especially when the gun was black and 0
cleaning it becomes a shiny silver.
Stallone plays the part well, but you see nothing spontaneousc ;
crazy as with such great actors like Robin Williams or Steve Martin.
I never expect anything truly inspiring or awesomely hilarious, b
with veteran actors like Stallone and Getty the quality could have be® 1
better.
In addition, the script is not flowing with torrents of comedic brf'
liance.
The story idea of the film is original, but nothing unusual or imag 1-
native is created in the script to embellish it.
In one scene, Tutti is driving the police car and is chasing thevil
lains. Joe is with her, scared out of his wits and amazed at how well she
is pursuing the suspects. Yet, they crash after two minutes into the chase
and the scene ends. The idea was good, but why could she not have
caught up to the villains and tried to make something funny happen.
"Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot" creates some funny scenes, but the)
are scarce to find. It is not a terrible movie, but I would wait until it'
taken off the new release shelf.
