Page 6 The Battalion Thursday, April23,1 Official urges students to take part Continued from Page 2 A&M is the AIDS Committee. This committee addresses issues and questions about AIDS and HIV on campus. There are also committees which offer support for — but are not limited to — particular fields of study such as the Committee on Charitable Contributions, for those individuals involved in fi nance and the Council on Teacher Education, which may interest ed ucation majors. Numerous other committees are available for students to look into or join. Many students hesitate to ap ply for membership in these com mittees because they feel their ex perience is inadequate, but no ex perience is needed for these posi tions. "No experience is necessary for any of the committees," Dupre said. "We're looking for diversity and these committees don't re quire a lot of time." Students who are interested in becoming involved on campus but do not think they have the time are encouraged to reconsider. Dupre said many of the commit tees meet only once a month and some meet as little as twice a year. Applicants are selected by the two co-chairs of the University Committees Council and the stu dent body president. Regular attendance is expected and a minimum 2.25 GPR is re quired from the chosen committee members. Students are encouraged to ap ply for as many positions as they wish. The selected students will serve through May '93. Applications and information on each committee are available in room 127 of the Student Services Building (across from Rudder). Applications are due Monday, April 27 at 5 p.m. The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569 / Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building AGGIE WANT APS $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1000 or less (price must appear in ad). THC WAR Of ON COUECE STUM ■ M Adults pay for kid's crimes CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) - Parents who contribute to juvenile criminal behavior will soon face fines of up to $500 or other penalties if their children are charged with committing crimes. A city ordinance taking effect Monday targets parents who encourage or help their children break the law. It also targets those who abet delinquency through negligent supervision. The ordinance was adopted 7-2 Tuesday along with other measures dealing with juvenile crime. Council members favored the measure as a way to encourage parents to be more concerned in their children's activities. "There is a lot more to this law than the $500 fine, and I don't think that's been said," said Councilman Clif Moss. "That's only a last resort. The judge has a lot of leeway in dealing with these parents." The ordinance fines parents or sentences them to parenting classes if their children are charged with criminal offenses. The council amended the or dinance after hearing concerii that it would impose a financ burden on low-income parents. District Judge Jack Hunti chairman of the Nueces Courlt Youth Crime Prevention Tati Force, supported the ordinance. "If you let your cat ordogott you can be fined up to $200 your child terrorizes the mj borhood, there's nothing that be done to you," Hunter said. "The more things we can the better." Mayor Mary Rhodes, howeva voted against the ordinance. Nash said students should go to the hearing bt cause they can make a difference. "I think we are at a real critical juncture," hesaii In other business, the Senate elected Tobin Boenj as Academic Affairs Chairman, Shannon Cowserti 1 External Affairs Chairwoman, Thomas Reed as Sit dent Services Chairman.
