Backyard Bierschwale
wins ARCA 500 at TWS
San Antonian holds off Allison to take flag
From Staff and Wire Reports
Eddie Bierschwale said it feels
good to win a race in his own
backyard.
Bierschwale, from San Anto
nio, slipped past Clifford Allison
with two laps to go and held off
the brother of NASCAR star Dav-
ey Allison to win Sunday's 500-
kilometer ARCA stock car race at
Texas World Speedway.
Bierschwale and Allison, from
Huey town, Ala., jockeyed for the
lead over the final three laps in a
sprint that was set up by a caution
period.
"I ain't never been that close in
a big car race," Bierschwale said.
"It's a different feeling. I was just
hanging out as far as I could go."
"This is definitely my biggest
win. I've won a lot of short track
races. They were all good, but this
is the sweetest. It's only 174 miles
from my driveway in San Antonio
to this track."
Bierschwale said the Splitfire
Spark Plugs team changed all four
tires every time he pitted.
"I don't knowhow many sets
we had," he said. "I know we put
one set back on. I was all over the
place and I kept screaming I've got
a flat.
"I got sideways a couple of
times out of turn two."
Allison, son of NASCAR leg
end Bobby Allison, held on until
two laps remained when Bier
schwale slipped his Oldsmobile
past Allison's Buick in turn No. 1.
Allison regained the lead on
the backstretch before Bierschwale
pulled in front by the length of a
fender crossing the line going into
the final circuit around the two-
mile Texas speedway.
"Going into turn three of the
last lap, the car got really side
ways and I had to lift," Allison
said. "That's when Eddie took the
lead. I'm still pleased with my
performance."
Bierschwale lengthened his
lead a bit and then held off Alli
son, winning by 0.32 of a second,
or about four car lengths. They
were the only two drivers on the
lead lap.
Bierschwale averaged 124.786
mph for the race and collected
$18,500 for the win. He was the
fastest qualifier, at 183.739 mph,
but started 21st because he could
not make the field in the first day
of qualifying.
Clay Young, of Smyrna, Ga.,
finished third in a Buick, one lap
back. Frank Kimmel, of George
town, Ind., was fourth, two laps
behind in a Pontiac.
The race featured 21 lead
changes among seven drivers.
The most serious crash oc
curred on lap 75 when Stan Fox,
more normally an Indy-car racer,
tangled with Mark Thompson
while battling for third place. Both
cars wound up in the wall.
Fox, from Janesville, Wis., had
been running as high as second.
Polesitter Loy Allen of Raleigh,
N.C., grabbed the lead at the start
of the 156-lap event and easily
pulled away from the field before
a yellow on lap 6 brought a cau
tion flag.
But Allen, who qualified at
183.327 mph, slipped back into
traffic after the caution and
dropped out early with a blown
engine.
Bill Venturini, of Chicago, the
ARCA points leader, ran near or
in the lead until lap 50, when an
oil leak took him off the pace.
Attrition on the steep-banked
oval was high. With only a quarter
of the race complete, one-third of
the starting field had retired. At
the halfway mark, only six cars re
mained on the lead lap.
Bob Keselowski, of Rochester
Hills, Mich., also made a bid with
his Chrysler. He held the lead
briefly before cutting a tire and
breaking an oil line.
Keselowski, who lost several
laps, appeared to have the fastest
car on the track but could not
make up lost ground and finished
fifth, four laps down.

Portland blazes San Antonio, 123-97
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Trail
Blazers clinched their second straight Pacific Divi
sion title Sunday with a 123-97 victory over San An
tonio as Terry Porter scored 28 points and Kevin
Duckworth tied his season high with 23.
The Blazers, even without Clyde Drexler be
cause of a sore right knee, never trailed as they en
sured themselves the homecourt playoff advantage
through the Western Conference finals. Drexler
rested his knee for the second time in the last three
contests.
The Spurs, 3-7 since losing David Robinson with
a torn ligament in his left hand, stayed close until
Portland outscored them 11-2 over the final two
minutes of the first half to take a 62-48 lead,
A 9-1 Portland run boosted it to 85-69 with 31/2
minutes left in the third period. The Blazers scored
the first seven points of the final quarter to turn the
game into a blowout.
Porter, who scored 14 in the second quarter, was
6-for-7 from 3-pomt range and had 10 assists. He
has averaged 27 points per game in his last six con
tests.
Duckworth also tied his season high of 12 re
bounds. He had eight points and seven rebounds in
the game's first 41 /2 minutes.
Gonzalez, Rangers nip Twins 4-3
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Juan
Gonzalez provided all the run pro
duction Kevin Brown needed Sun
day night in his second consecu
tive complete game.
Gonzalez hit a three-run
homer in the first inning and
broke an eighth-inning tie with an
RBI single, giving Texas a 4-3 vic
tory.
The Rangers came into the
game with 48-runs in their five
previous victories, but only Gon
zalez was hot this time.
"It's great to have all that of
fense,”Brown said. "I just don't
think I should be counting on it.
"My job is to get guys out, not
worry about what the hitters are
doing.
"You don't want to put the
pressure on the offense," he said.
Brown shut out Seattle in his
other start this year and kept his
streak alive by blanking the Twins
through six innings.
But the 3-0 cushion Gonzalez
gave Brown in the first evaporated
in the seventh when he allowed
four of his six hits.
